No matter how unfit you might think Donald Trump is for the presidency - no matter how corrupt, reckless, indulgent or disruptive his behaviour seems - nothing restores the sense of his still-better-than-even chance of winning in 2020 like a Democrat TV debate.
Americans are overwhelmingly in favour of an alternative to Trump, given consistent polling that shows he suffers a disapproval rating unmatched by any president since World War 2.
The prize for Democrats, in short, is so close to hand all it would take is for one of the 20 or so candidates to lean down and scoop it off the footpath.
Yet, with just over 110 days to go before the first primary votes are counted in Iowa, the centre-left party continues to make painfully heavy work of it.
After more than a year of campaigning and four prime-time TV debates in less than four months - the latest on Tuesday night (Wednesday AEDT) - there is still no stand-out contender for the nomination.
That someone who might appeal to the broad swathe of middle America that put Trump into office almost three years ago remains elusive.
The front-runners are all problematic in one way or another - and their flaws were on full display over almost three hours of debate on Tuesday night.
