Former Governor Considers Senate Seat (Louisiana)

Former Louisiana governor and congressman, Buddy Roemer, says he's considering a political comeback by jumping into the race to replace retiring US Senator John Breaux.
Roemer says the Senate race interests him because -- quote -- Louisiana desperately needs to get its act together.
His interest might also have been piqued by a recent poll conducted for a group of businessmen that showed him with 89 percent name recognition and 48 percent of the respondents saying they would at least consider voting for him.
If he enters the race, he would become the second Republican in the race, joining US Representative David Vitter of Metairie.
Three Democrats also are in the race -- Congressman Chris John of Crowley, state Treasurer John Kennedy of Madisonville and state Representative Arthur Morrell of New Orleans.
But Roemer says his eight years in Congress and four years as governor might boost the state's clout on Capitol Hill following the loss of Breaux and US Representative Billy Tauzin.
Roemer, who's 60, says -- quote -- maybe an old head with a bright vision for Louisiana is just what the state needs. Roemer says he'll make a decision on his political future by midsummer.
Qualifying for the November 2nd primary is August 4th through 6th.

His first term as governor was pretty good, but his second term was almost entirely preocuppied with having a public mid-life crisis. I wouldn't entirely rule out considering him, but he wouldn't be my first (or second, or third, choice)

I think you have him confused with former Gov. Mike Foster. Roemer was a one-termer whose ineptness led to the "Runoff from Hell".

In the poll conducted by Vern Kennedy, Roemer runs second to the present leader, Congressman David Vitter. The numbers show:
1. Congressman David Vitter 28%
2. Former Governor Buddy Roemer 19%
3. Treasurer John Kennedy 17%
4. Congressman Chris John 17%
5. Rep. Arthur Morrell 7%

You're right. I do remember some weirdness during Romer's tenure, though. He wore a rubber band on his wrist that he'd snap to remind himself of--well, whatever it was he was trying to remind himself of. And he was fond of making speeches filled with inconprehensible New Age type language.

Feingold finds favor in early election poll
By 51% to 29%, residents polled in March said they would like to see Feingold re-elected for his third term, with the remainder not answering the question or saying they didn't know

The polls show that Roemer, as well as Kennedy and John, all run a dead heat when facing Vitter one on one. Vitter polls well over 15% in the black community, so the conventional wisdom is that he cant hold this against any of the potential runoff candidates, including Roemer. Therefore, those analyzing the numbers conclude that anybody beats Vitter in the runoff. Its a question of getting there.
The polls show Roemer with high name recognition (91%), but also with a very solid negative of 30%. Vitter carries a 2 ½ to one positive-negative rating, John a 4 to 1 positive-negative rating, and Kennedy comes out the best with a 5 to 1 ratio.

I don't know about Roemer. If he could keep Chris John from winning, then good. But I don't think I want him in the Senate. It takes a special guy to lose to David Duke in the Jungle Primary.
