It's Not Life, But Close

Colombo mobster Gregory Scarpa Jr. was slammed last week with a 40 year sentence for racketeering and other crimes by a Brooklyn Federal Judge who rejected his plea for leniency and downplayed his spying on a known terrorist for the FBI.

Judge Reena Raggi dismissed his year of spying against World Trade Center bombing mastermind Ramzi Yousef while they were prison mates as insignificant at best and more likely "part of a scam."

At his trial, Scarpa testified that he alerted the FBI of plots to kill a judge and a prosecutor. He also described how he used a tiny two-inch spy camera to photograph bomb formulas that Yousef slipped through the cracks in the wall of their cells.

Scarpa, 47, was acquitted of five murders which each carried a life sentence, but convicted of racketeering and separate counts of loansharking, bookmaking and tax fraud. He admitted at trial that he was inducted into the Mafia, but claimed the crimes in his six-count indictment were all committed by his father, Greg Sr., a Colombo capo and a top-echelon FBI informant for 30 years.

What did Janet Reno know, and when did she know it?

This is just one more good reason why there should not be "criminal prosecutions" for terrorists. These people need to be isolated incommunicato for the duration. They are dangerous even behind bars.

This sort of jumped out at me:

I've got bad news for Scarpa. He may consider himself a Catholic, but the Muslims still consider him a Muslim. There is no such thing as "faking it" when you say the words converting to Islam. It's a one way street, whether you are serious about it or not.

He can look for a capital punishment fatwa placed against him, if one already hasn't already been issued.

In October 1998 - in a trial where Scarpa publicly revealed his assistance to the FBI - the mobster was convicted of murder conspiracy. The feds downplayed his cooperation.

The links are here on this thread. Yesterday, I posted the letter on the PDB thread, at post #111. Stephen Dresch , a former state representative from Michigan's Upper Peninsula, runs a kind of investigative service now.

ThE "Intelligence Timeline" reveals that Yousef knew about something happening to a TWA or AA flight that fateful day, before it happened.

From the timeline:

July 2, 1996 (FBI 302, date investigated June 29, 1996) Yousef spoke of Bojinga doing the bombing in Saudi Arabia. Yousef stated that he was originally sent on that mission to check the security measures and that tanker truck was discussed.

July 17, 1996 (FBI 302) TWA Flight 800 crashed killing 230 passengers off Long Island, New York. Yousef asked to use the telephone the night of July 17, 1996 he also had a visit with his attorney until 10:00pm and still requested use of the telephone which was denied.

July 18, 1996 ( FBI 302) Jerry Koupakis a former U.S. Customs Agent that was corrupt told Scarpa that he told his father not to travel TWA or American Airlines on the morning of July 18, 1996. Yousef told him this information prior to July 18, 1996.

July 23/24, 1996 (FBI 302 & Handwritten) Ismoil told Scarpa, "I told you this is going to happen." He was also referencing a conversation Scarpa and he had months prior where Ismoil said that "nothing would be left of New York just give it some time."

Who dropped the ball?
