Alleged sexual predator’s release worries Montrose teens

After making his first court appearance on Thursday, 50-year-old James Michael Broomas is out on a $10,000-bond.

State District Judge Carol Davies also ordered Broomas to stay at least 200 yards away from the intersections of Montrose and Westheimer where many of his alleged victims congregate.

The news of his release has made Montrose street kids extremely worried.

“I am terrified, honestly, because I had piercings in my back, and he whipped me and he tore every piercing out of my back,” one Montrose teen named Terry says.

Broomas was arrested Wednesday after police received a tip from Sen. Rodney Ellis's office.

The tip came in the form of an anonymous letter which described in detail how Broomas would sexually exploit the teens and beat them.

Brandon Dudley, who works at the senator’s office, was so appalled by the allegations, he notified police.

"You know, I consulted the senator on it. We felt like the best thing to do in this particular situation would be to call HPD,” Dudley says. “So we called HPD, spoke to them, faxed them a copy of the letter, told them the situation and they took it from there."

The letter describes graphically how Broomas allegedly tied up his victims and beat them for half an hour, leaving them with bruises on their buttocks.

It also explains how this accountant, also known as "Spanky," would pay a finders fee for people to bring him more, quote, "fresh young men."

When police began investigating this case, they found more than 300 videotapes and Polaroids of pornographic material in his apartment.

Dudley says he's glad that the anonymous letter Sen. Ellis received was able to stop this alleged sexual predator.

"It was good to see that tangible results of some of the work we do sometimes and it was good to know, because the letter was pretty graphic, and there were some really bad things that were spelled out in it and to know that maybe this person, that these things, might stop was good news to hear," Dudley says.

Police continue to investigate this case. They are urging anyone else who has fallen victim to this alleged sexual predator to contact HPD.

Broomas was charged with one count of indecency with a child. More charges are pending.

In the meantime, Sen. Ellis's office says it was not able to track down who wrote the anonymous letter.

However, by forwarding it to HPD, officers were able to investigate the case against Broomas.

Broomas is scheduled to appear in court again on Aug. 11.

Whoopsie, maybe he was doing a fashion protest. But Montrose is known as a very gay part of Houston and letting that homosexual sadist (named "Broomas") loose again is just asking for a lot more trouble.

Not to justify this creep, but it sounds like his victims thought they were doing something consensual (possibly for cash?) and didn't know what Broomas intended would be that bad. They're lucky his perversion was channeled and he didn't kill them.

Teenage prostitution and statutory rape are still crimes. Also at what point does S&M become assault?

It doesn't take ignoring a "safe word" for that line to be crossed. Remember that there have been several incidents of men who consented to have their penis cut off by men they met over the internet. One guy even agreed to to being murdered. Just because you consent does not make it "legal".

Hey now, quit being judgemental. Homosexuality is every bit as normal as heterosexuality, and this is just Mr. Broomas' preference. We should support and nurture his life decisions, because hey, this is America. If his dream is to beat young gay men's asses with broomhandles and tear out their back piercings - yes, back piercings - then dammit, let the man dream! Why, this may be the very reason that Washington daringly crossed the Delaware, why Lincoln fought to preserve the Union and emancipate the slaves, why blacks valiantly sat in at segregated diners across the South - so that one day, Mr. Broomas could be free to pursue his dream, a dream of ass-beating and piercing-tearing, rape, sodomy, and S&M. It may not be conventional, but that's the American way!

I was commenting on the situation, not supporting any of its participants.

I was just expounding on the points. The kids are presumably runaways, maybe even from the shelter around the corner.

Some are likely drug addicts.

Child prostitution (especially among the homosexual community) doesn't seem to be a high priority among the HPD.

Then again there are plenty of transexual prostitutes click-clacking in heels up and down lower Westheimer.

They are unable to legally consent to prostitution and even prohibited from engaging in sex with adults. Doesn't matter if they said "sure".
