It’s a good thing that the chairman of the Republican National Committee, Ed Gillespie, had to leave the Congress of Racial Equality reception early. If he had stayed a while longer, he might have heard the chairman of CORE, Roy Innis, upbraid the GOP leadership in a powerful speech that was wildly applauded by the audience.
Mr. Innis had started his speech by noting that George W. Bush four years ago only got 7% of the black vote. “I asked myself what did this young man do, from a fine family, a family that ran the United Negro College Fund for decades, what did he do to make black folks so angry at him?” Mr. Innis said. He then asked, “Is it because he’s a Republican? But then it was the Republicans that freed us from slavery. It was the Republican Party who passed the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments. In modern times, in the 20th century, it was the Republican Party that was behind the civil rights bill of the late ’50s. The people who opposed it were the Democrats. “That is the profound, dismal ignorance that exists in our country and among our people.They do not realize what the Bush family has done, not just this decade but for many decades,” he said.
I must admit that I, too, had no idea of the connection between the Bush family and the United Negro College Fund. Jonathan Bush, George H.W. Bush’s brother, was chairman until 1994, and the Bush family has always been a major donor.
“What is really sad is that the Democrats get no penalty for filibustering the civil rights bill of the ’50s and the ’60s,” Mr. Innis said...

I agree.
The Republican Party should put together commercials that highlight its support for civil rights since it was the party of Abraham Lincoln. It should show how the dream of Dr. Martin Luthor King, Jr., that one day people will be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their charactor, is a Republican, not a Democratic, value.
However, this can't be done by the Republican Party alone. It is more important for people like Roy Innis to keep making speeches like this one, to make the African-American constituency open to learning this history -- and about the involvement of the Bush family in particular in this battle.

Republicans have nothing to be ashamed of, and everything to be proud of. We are the party of color-blind citizenship. That was our position all during the bad old days, and it is our position still.
If you are obsessed with race, then you won't be happy in the Republican party. The DNC is your natural home, and may God bless you. But if you are an American first, if you see character first and foremost, then at least on that issue you would be a natural Republican. Republicans should never apologize for racism, or allow ourselves to be put in the position of explaining it or justifying it. Slavery was a Democrat institution, Jim Crow was a Democrat institution, the organized repression of Americans based on race was a Democrat institution right up into living memory for many of us.
Let the Democrats apologise for Democrat history. We are the good guys here. Again.
A sizable majority of blacks have been lied to by the democRATs for so long that they're predisposed to just accept as fact that Republicans are racists. Of course they are; everybody knows that.
Any attempts on the part of Republicans to refute allegations of racism are met with derision regardless of any facts that actually do refute them.

I agree. This is a great article and it amazes me how more of us blacks don't even take the time to research this information. I know I researched and I was surprised at what I found.
no good deed goes unpunished. The United Negro College Fund founded and run by a Bush for 50 years and the people who benefit show their thanks by lying.
Is there a link for the info on the Bushes involvement with UNCF? I have some people I'd like to share this with.

Virtue may be its own reward, but demagogic rhetoric gets the votes.
I'll be darned if I can find one place in this article where Innis is upbraiding (scolding, sharply reproaching) the GOP leadership.
