Blame Mary! (is CBS leaking damning info to save itself by blaming Mary Mapes/Democrats/Kerry?)

So far, Ellis' prediction of second-day anti-Mapes revelations has proved eerily prescient. And Joe Lockhart is in on the Save-Dan-By-Throwing-Mary-Overboard conspiracy! ... P.S.: I don't understand why it would have been wrong for Mapes to ask Lockhart to call Bill Burkett as part of a deal to get the documents. If the documents hadn't been phony that would have been smart journalism, no? A harmless favor to produce a big scoop. It only looks like partisanship on the part of Mapes if it was not part of an implicit deal to get the story--i.e., if Mapes was just freelancing with her Dem buddies to help bring down Bush. Perversely, by denying a deal the CBS flacks actually make Mapes look gratuitously bad. ... Oh wait, I forgot. According to Ellis they're trying to make Mapes look bad.. ...

If CBS is indeed behind all this leaking to USA Today and AP:

- gains favor with the Bushies - can blame Mary Mapes, a Democrat partisan - takes the spotlight off of CBS and on Kerry/DNC - save Dan Rather and 60 Minutes - get some of Republican viewers back

The scum. We know who's to blame. Dan Rather has had the hots to defeat Bush; that's obvious. He was the one who pushed the memo story through 60 Minutes, getting it on the air despite the advice of their "advisors." Rather is to blame. He should take the fall.

Here's what they want you to do Mary.

Don't let 'em do it.

Captain Dan the Newsman should go down with the ship -- can we fire an extra torpedo into it as it goes down?

Except it makes your campaign a willing participant in 'dirty tricks.' No 'plausible deniability' here.

What I wonder is what, exactly, did they tell Lockhart? "Hey, we can get documents to ruin Bush and all you have to do is make a phone call?"

Perhaps Mary and Peter Arnett can ride off into the sunset together!

Liars for the ages.

But of course dan should assume full responsibility (a bad word for liberals) because dan is not simply a reporter or talking head....

Ol dan the dem IS THE EDITOR AND CHIEF OF CBS EVENING NEWS. Period. Nothing goes on his program without his ok.

The problem with CBS is that they didn't even try to do the proper due diligence to verify the memos. They dismissed people like Staudt and Killian's relatives as "GOP ideologues," while using the testimony of a "Yellow Dog" Democrat pool typist as their witness. Rather believed what he wanted to believe, and tried to convince everyone else to believe the same thing. All parties, including Rather, and the entire Viacom management need to go down for this.

yeah and the SBVT stuff was, of course, too hot to handle and could not be "verified" so they ignored it.

This was Dan Rather's last chance to destroy one of the Bushes, and he was determined to do it no matter how many people cautioned him against it. It was his personal vendetta.

His inability to even concede the point that the memos could be fakes, when everyone else on the planet knows that they are proves just how detached from reality this partisan hack is. Even the DUmmies concede it. But not Dan.

Pathetic.

IMHO, Mary Mapes is stupid. She's been working on the "Bush shirked his duty" story for 5 years. And she never came up with documentation that he served his required time honorably?

Trying to save Dan and John by throwing Mary to the pirahnas ought to solidify the women's vote... [snicker]
George W. Bush will be reelected by a margin of at least ten per cent

"Bush shirked his duty" story for 5 years.

They were trying to get really down and dirty -- even dirtier than the shirking of duty story that they couldn't prove after 5 years of digging. These documents were forged to frame the President by showing that he disobeyed a direct order from a superior officer. They were going for the jugular. They are NOT going to get away with it. I imagine behind the scenes that President Bush is furious about this.

I just figured out why Burkett would want to talk to someone in the Kerry campaign before turning over the documents - he was asking for a job in the Kerry administration in exchange for the documents.

Their own experts told them they were fakes, so they intentionally put them out knowing they were false---which is why they put so much emphasis on the idea that they acted in good failth, and were misled. Burkitt is still lying as the patsy, fall-guy,cut-away, to stop digging. But the real question is why were the forgeries so crude, anyone could do a decent job with an old typewriter. I belive that the freeper theory (which thread I don't rember) that the burkitt's post that the files were being reassmbled, then the originals are being kept, until Bush denies their authencity.

Oh, yeah, they're blaming it on the poor boss woman, poor, victimized Democrats (see title that should include "ZOT") and poor, poor, misunderstood Kerry, instead of blaming it on the Republican white male conspiracy to save the left/liberal suck-up peon, Gunga Dan. Renegade Democrat commentors who see the mean, mean, right wing conspiracy by the "Bushies" (Democrat word--works sort of like "Fundies") told us so.
