CBS Fallgal Mapes Still Working Forged Doc Story
NewsMax ^ | September 22, 2004 | Carl Limbacher

Posted on 09/22/2004 6:53:13 AM PDT by Kaslin

Designated Rathergate fallgal Mary Mapes is still on the job at the network's formerly great news division, despite a deluge of leaks from CBS employees fingering her as the "60 Minutes" producer who dropped the ball in the forged memo story.

"CBS News staffers say they're puzzled why Mapes is still apparently actively working on the memos story," reports USA Today in Wednesday editions.

CBS News spokeswoman Sandy Genelius refused to comment on Mapes continuing work on the memos story, but acknowledged, however, that the "60 Minutes" producer remains on CBS's payroll. The fact that Mapes is still on the job has prompted speculation that she may not be willing to walk the plank - or at least not alone.

And since her key source for the disastrous story, Bill Burkett, was also a longtime source for Dan Rather himself, suspicion continues to swirl that Mapes may have the goods on CBS misconduct that transcends her own role in Rathergate.

The Rathergate fallgal, who's been searching for dirt on President Bush's National Guard record since 1999, has spent all that time working under Rather on "60 Minutes II." She's also been a top producer on the anchorman's "Evening News" broadcasts since 1989.

CBS News faced new charges of journalistic impropriety on Sept. 21, 2004, a day after the network said it regretted using questionable documents in a report challenging President Bush's military service. At issue was a report in USA Today that the source of the documents had given them to CBS only after the network agreed to arrange a conversation between the source and the presidential campaign of Bush's opponent, Democratic Sen. John Kerry. News anchor Dan Rather is shown at a news conference in New York on October 18, 2001. (Peter Morgan/Reuters)

Dan has been play-acting at being a reporter for so many years now — the suspenders, the loosened tie, and all the other stuff that would look great if he were auditioning for a cheesy dinner-theatre revival of "The Front Page"; the over-the-top intros: "Bob Schieffer, one of the best hard-nosed reporters in the business has been working his sources. What have you managed to uncover for us, Bob?," after which Bob reads out a Democratic National Committee press release. Dan has been doing all this so long he doesn't seem to realize the news isn't just a show.

Maybe she is going to break the story that documents are fakes.

People like Mapes and Rather probably have "the goods" on SeeBS as a whole.......CBS may have MORE to lose by 86ing them.

She's got a sort of "deer-in-the-headlights" thing going on in that photo.

How very appropriate.

You know it sure seems odd how ABC, The NYTimes and AP have been coming out saying she is a die hard liberal. Even more odd is how Lockhart sez "Some producer called me..." like he doesn't know who she is.

Yowza...

"CBS News staffers say they're puzzled why Mapes is still apparently actively working on the memos story," reports USA Today in Wednesday editions.

Well I'm not puzzled at all.

Remember, Dan Rather is the boss and he believes both that the story behind the documents is true and, incredibly, that the documents are not forgeries - they just can't be validated. With this mentality at the top what else could you expect from CBS News?

Probably looking for someone else to pin it on. McAwful is already trying to make it look like Rove did it. Maybe Mapes is creating new documents to prove it? ;)

Let's see, the two people who are still aqgressively working the memo/guard storyline are:

Mapes At CBS and Terrible Terry at the DNC. Connection anyone?

Give that dope Rather one of Drudge's old fedoras to complete his outfit, and give Mapes a chance to go to work for the DNC - - FULL-time. These people are not journalists.

Maybe the entire see-BS news crew can be sent over to the Sundance channel. They are always looking for some wacko to pedal their leftist drivel.
