FCC Fines CBS $550,000 for Jackson Super Bowl Show

WASHINGTON — Federal regulators on Wednesday fined CBS a record $550,000 for Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction," which exposed the singer's breast during this year's Super Bowl halftime show.

The Federal Communications Commission voted unanimously to slap each of the 20 CBS-owned television stations with the maximum indecency penalty of $27,500. The total penalty of $550,000 is the largest fine levied against a television broadcaster. Most of the FCC's bigger fines have been against radio stations.

The agency's five commissioners decided not to fine CBS' more than 200 affiliate stations.

Couldn't happen to a more deserving network. However, I question the fairness of slapping the fine on 20 stations. Big government handing out big fines to fund their operations...this kind of punishment could be turned against conservative stations some day. I find it scary, myself.

You would think, but with c bs who knows. They seem to have 9 lives. The way the dims are spinning this makes my hair turn gray. I remember election night 2000. Rather was just sure that he made the right call on Gore winning Florida. I know he was not alone, but he was first and he was giddy, then his face turned to dismay. I just hope and pray we do not have to live through another night like that ever again.

Well, I suppose it was a way to get around the $27,500 limit, but the implication is that these stations did something wrong, that the (non-owned) affiliates didn't.
And I don't think that's the case - it's the producers of the show (corporate) who are to blame.

While it's a start, this is loose change for cBS. Also, I don't think the FCC has any pull with broadcasters, only the licensed stations.
