NBC's Lisa Myers Reports

Kerry campaign says timing of 'Fortunate Son' ad campaign, 60 Minutes story a 'coincidence'

Having acknowledged that its own standards were violated, CBS News named an independent panel to investigate what went wrong: Former Republican Attorney General Dick Thornburgh and retired chief of the Associated Press Louis Boccardi.

The investigation focuses on the process that led to airing possibly fraudulent documents challenging the President's military service and why the CBS Producer put the source of those documents, longtime Bush critic Bill Burkett, in touch with the Kerry Campaign before the story aired.

Journalism expert Robert Steele says, "The producer in this case was already operating in an ethical minefield. She squirted gasoline on the explosives when she made that connection."

Republicans launched a frontal attack on CBS, accusing the network of "a serious lapse in judgment" beyond the initial report in not suspending producer Mary Mapes and apologizing only for the documents rather than retracting the story itself.

Republicans said the Kerry Campaign clearly knew something about the CBS Report before it aired.

Terry Holt of the Republican National Committee says, "We think they should come clean and answer the question, 'what information did you obtain and what did you intend to do with it?'"

The day before the CBS report, Democrats began a concerted attack on the President's National Guard record.

However, the Kerry Campaign insists it knew nothing about the CBS documents, claiming the timing was a coincidence.

And if you believe that it was a coincidence I'm sure you also believe in the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus.

With Kerry married to a multi-billionaire any Democratic party criticism of "W" for having a few bucks rings hollow.

Every penney they spend on such advertising is just wasted.

I've noticed a lot of those lately. It's like the thing about the draft coming back. First you hear a word about it from some politician on a talk show, and next thing you know, it's in every newspaper and magazine in the land--and in campaign commercials too. Instantaneously. And all by chance. Must be something in the stars this season.

Indeed. the Kerry/Edwards campaign is a long bout of sugarcoating, although I would say that Edwards is the most sacharine candidate since Bill Clinton. Kerry & Edwards are the SugarCoat Twins.

Dems Take Chance With 'Fortunate Son' Slam

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON Sept. 9, 2004 — Seizing on 30-year-old memos and memories, Sen. John Kerry's operatives are painting an unflattering portrait of President Bush as the "fortunate son" who used family connections to dodge the Vietnam War and then lied about it.

-snip-

"Two things: One, he didn't tell the truth and that's not going to go away," said Howard Wolfson, a strategist dispatched to the DNC by Kerry's campaign to go negative on Bush. "Second, it begins to paint a picture of a very fortunate son who uses connections and pulls strings for special favors. That is a theme running through the man's life."

-snip-

How long was it after the CBS memos aired that Kerry's commercial using the memos started running?

How long does a commercial like that usually take to plan and make?

I've been out all day and just read the "sugar coating" coincidink. LOL, McAuliffe stepped in it now.

Has the MSM caught on to this story yet...the timing of the "sugar coating" phrase?

The SeeBS/DNC "coincidence" is like the coincidence between smoke and fire.
