"this island was the way to the other islands; and from these you may pass to the to the opposite continent, which encompasses the true ocean"...
Plato put Atlantis outside the straits of Gibraltar. The opposite continent mentioned is the Americas. While I find it likely that much of the continental shelf was exposed all over the world during the glaciations, and that humans lived there, Atlantis was in the Atlantic, or it was nowhere.

"Plato put Atlantis outside the straits of Gibraltar. " Plato didn't say one word about Gibraltar.

Thanks I was waiting for this! Everybody knows (I thought) that the ancients "flew" it away and put it in hibernation to protect it from the snakeheads!

"He said the Pillars of Hercules, and that is Gibraltar, then as it is now."...and that (ahem) is an opinion, not a fact.

It's not an opinion, it's a fact. Plato uses that very geographic landmark in his text. And Herodotus also refers to the Pillars of Hercules in such a way that it can only refer to Gibraltar -- and so do all other ancient sources which mention the Pillars of Hercules. Saying that Plato's "Pillars of Hercules" refers to some place off SE Asia is a matter of opinion. :')
