When I took judo as a teenager, I had to throw/get thrown by girls. When I took martial arts as an adult, my practice opponents were often women. I don't see the big deal, but I'm sure there will be plenty of opinions.

Did you ever participate in tournaments? If so, were you ever forced to fight a female? I participated in a few but men and women were always in separate classes.

This type of situation with a young woman would be exceedingly embarrassing for the young men that I have coached. When I was wrestling I don't think I would have competed against a girl.

Wrestling is a *lot* more "intimate" than judo ever thought about being. I really just don't think mixed-gender martial wrestling is a good idea (martial as opposed to recreational, if you get my drift. . . ).

I took a Tae Kwon Do class in college, and the instructor insisted on co-ed sparring. I was the girls' most popular sparring partner. I was raised that you NEVER raise a hand against a woman. NEVER! All I could ever do was just try to cover up and not get hit too badly for three minutes. Most guys didn't want to spar with me after that, because I would be in a really nasty mood...

Yes it is interesting that wrestling is somehow treated differently than say the martial arts, where no distinction is ever give to the sexes.

My son has been in Tang Soo Do now for nearly 3.5 years, his master is a 5th degree black belt with 25 years experience... there are numberous female EDan and SoDan's in his do jung, as well as students of both genders.

Now during sparring generally they are paired up by gender during testing and practice, there is no pity or issue when this is not done. Believe me there are women there that can kick 99% of men's arses without trying. There is a female 13 year old black belt that I wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley.

Its all in how it is treated, if it is treated as a joke by fellow competitors and coaches it will be nothing but a joke. If its a serious competition, and she's less than serious about it, she'll wash out. If she is serious about it, she'll make those guys who want to just take a dive rue that decision if she is any good.
