The controversy actually erupted in late January when students at Hamilton College in -- of all places -- Clinton, New York, protested a scheduled appearance by Churchill based upon assertions he had made in an essay entitled "Some People Push Back: On the Justice of Roosting Chickens."
"As for those in the World Trade Center," Churchill wrote, "well, really, let's get a grip here, shall we? True enough, they were civilians of a sort. But innocent? Gimme a break."
Leaving aside for the moment the burning question of whether "gimme a break" is proper professorial nomenclature, Churchill continued blithely smearing the dead by declaring that Trade Center workers were -- surprisingly enough -- "little Eichmanns," charged with greasing the wheels of an imperial -- well, you know the drill. If you don't know the drill, scan a few Students for a Democratic Society pamphlets from 1969 or thereabouts. The drill hasn't changed much, and nor has Churchill, judging from his official faculty photograph......

Brilliant piece - thanks for posting. It is difficult to imagine a sense in which Churchill is not a talentless phony, his signal scholastic virtue apparently the ability to slosh the rubes with footnotes. His portion of my generation has taken to itself the opposite of the Beatles' old advice "hate is all you need." It has, in fact, served Mr. Churchill very well.

I kind of admire Churchill - he plays liberal academics like a violin. His Indian radical chic act has parleyed a masters degree in nothing from a no-name college into cush six-figure tenured position at a Big Twelve school. And he fleeces liberals around the country for four large a pop just to listen to him rant.
Didn't Churchill refuse to sign his SF180 much like someone else we know?
