CA: Opponents Suggest Public is Tiring of Gov.'s Stunts

Mar. 2 (ABC7) — The governor clearly wants a special legislative session to consider three major government reform ideas. A one-man lobbying campaign is now underway targeting the voters, even as Democratic critics say his reforms won't reform much.

The governor stopped in Hayward to push his latest reform agenda, carrying out his promise to take his message to the people. Some are beginning to question his use of staged events to make his point.

The governor's Hollywood gimmicks are nothing new, and are most often his own ideas. His newest gimmick rolled out yesterday: a Humvee dubbed "Reform One."

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, (R) California: "I want to give you guys a bit of entertainment, because I know you're bored to death with this political stuff. You see, we've got to spice up California a little bit."

Last week he called for the end of overspending by muscling off a spigot flowing with red ink. During the recall campaign, he smashed a car to show his opposition to the car tax.

Todd Harris, governor's campaign adviser: "Of course, his background is in film and movies. So he's always thinking of ways to communicate things visually and ways to make things big."

Even the governor's strongest opponents have a tough time competing for public and media attention.

Democrats say the public is getting tired of the governor's showmanship, citing Gov. Schwarzenegger's dip in approval ratings.

Dario Frommer, (D) Assembly Majority Leader: "Despite the governor's antics, the Hollywood stunts that he's doing, the voters are already beginning to see through his plan. His numbers are plummeting."

Political watchers say these stunts will continue to resonate with voters as long as the governor is perceived as an outsider and a reformer.

Barbara O'Connor, political communications professor: "The minute they cease to do so, then the stunts get weary as well. And they start to make fun of them."

The governor's extraordinary ability to communicate also allows him to raise extraordinary amounts of campaign money.

He's brought in a record $26-million in his first year in office, and this week he'll head out-of-state, hoping to raise $50-million more for his reform campaign.

I am tired of the scumbag Rats doing nothing but defend the status quo. I laugh when I hear them refer to themselves as "progressive" (look the word up in the dictionary). Ha!

Agreed.. Obstructionism in the defense of a crooked status quo is no virtue,, and seeking to eradicate them is a worthy goal.

6 months of this kind of stuff and more is gonna wear a lot of folks out.

But that is one of the left's best hopes, that not many folks show up to vote.

I know I'm sick of his "Non-reform" reforms. Always talking about fixing things but never doing a darn thing about it.

He is doing a chearleading routine, and most people like cheerleader segments. IMHO, I think it will wear down the liberals more then the conservatives. Ya gotta admit, it is entertaining...love the red ink picture.
