Dunes hit by string of armed robberies?

GREY'S VALLEY WELL — Spanish-speaking men in a black sport utility vehicle attacked two San Diego residents camping near the Plank Road Monument here Sunday evening, a stretch of the east county desert south of the Grey's Well Interstate 8 off-ramp.

The men in the SUV reportedly shot at the man and woman after the couple scrambled into their trailer for safety.

After trying to bash the trailer open by ramming it with the front of the SUV, the men drove off.

The woman, who asked not to be identified, said Monday that the attack was just one of a series of pre-sunset robberies.

She said people camping nearby also were hit by the bandits, who were reportedly looking for anything valuable.

The woman's brother, who left the campsite shortly before it was targeted, said county law enforcement should have warned campers to be on the lookout for bandits.

The brother, who said he would never return to the Glamis dunes, said he received a call just after 5:30 p.m. Sunday night from his niece, who told him her mom was being robbed at the dunes.

His sister said her husband asked the men in the SUV in Spanish, "What do you want?" trying to defuse the situation.

The bandits allegedly answered him with "Shoot them."

"My sister is lying on the floor, freaked out as you can imagine," the brother said. "Then they took the Navigator and started ramming the back door of the trailer."

The brother said he has heard the bandits, a group of 20-25 people, target relatively isolated camps with only one vehicle and a trailer.

"I'll never go back. I'll go to Dumont. That's sad; you cannot protect that border," he said.

The Sheriff's Office was still investigating the attack as of Monday afternoon, according to Sgt. Anthony Brewer of the Sheriff's Office's Winterhaven substation

Sounds like more of George Bush's good hearted people doing work that Americans simply refuse to do.

I'm sure glad there were no dangerous "vigilantes" in the area. Someone could have been hurt.

Some interesting scenarios come to mind involving decoys and sitting duck SUV bandits. As John Russell ("Hombre") says to Cicero Grimes:

"I've got a question for you...how are you going to get back down that hill?"

I’ll quote you from:

“These people have to be stopped before someone gets hurt.”

Darn right they need to be stopped.

That's what should be done but it won't be done.

Think this is an isolated incident? Take a trip down the road from Eagle Pass to Del Rio in Texas.

So why didn't the victims shoot back?

Oh, yeah, I forgot: this was in California!

My brother & sis-in-law go to Glamis all the time. I'll have to talk to them and see if they've experienced anything like this.
