ON the morning of Saturday, Feb. 26, a day before the Academy Awards, the actress Carrie Fisher woke up in her Beverly Hills home next to the lifeless body of a gay Republican political operative named R. Gregory Stevens.
Thus ended one of the more improbable friendships that Hollywood and Washington have known - and a globe-trotting, adventurous, but ultimately debilitating existence that might be fodder for a Tinseltown thriller, if it only had a satisfying resolution.
Before its abrupt end, Mr. Stevens's journey had taken him from the beaches of San Clemente, Calif., and the slopes of Sun Valley, Idaho, all the way up the Republican ranks to a job in the first Bush White House at age 26. And it launched him on a jet-setting career as a political fixer manipulating elections in backrooms and palaces from Costa Rica to Croatia, Thailand to Togo, South Korea to the former Soviet Union.
Along the way, he survived disease in Africa and shrapnel in a leg in either the Middle East or the Balkans, depending on whom you believe, and he somehow acquired a mysterious piece of metal - this an autopsy confirmed - in the back of his skull.
"He thought he was invincible," Ms. Fisher said in an interview. "The way he died, it was like Patton dying in a car accident."
At long last, Mr. Stevens, in the months leading up to his demise, was growing tired of his hard-driving life, and he was talking to Ms. Fisher about slowing down, traveling less and maybe building himself a room on her estate.
His life ceased, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner's report, when the cocaine and the prescription narcotic oxycodone in Mr. Stevens's system overwhelmed his already enlarged and diseased heart.

stay out da bushes
Why is it that if its a gay republican, they plaster that he is gay, but if its a dem that is never mentioned?
When they show Barney Frank from now on, they should show the following:
Barney Frank (D) MA, Homo
Imagine the phrase "gay Democrat political operative" ever being used. I can't.
How about they just don't show Barney Frank at all anymore?
Wait a minute! Carrie Fisher woke up next to his lifeless body? Were they sleeping together?
But I thought Carrie Fisher was a woman. The article says that the deceased was a "gay" man. Maybe he was just happy (old meaning of gay), because he was with her; but no, this is from the New York Times, where "gay" means homosexual.
So what is the world coming to, when homosexualss are in heterosexual relationships?
Sigh! It gets more and more confusing all the time.
That will work also, unfortunatly, he just seems to show up all the time on the Sunday shows.
Well Carrie could easily be mistaken for a man these days...
I think she's fallen on hard times. Lives in a single wide trailer.
So, who opens the door for who? Sigh...
We are assuming that "woke up" refers to awakening in ones bed from a peaceful night of sleep. It could mean coming around on the couch or floor after a night of drugging and boozing.
The last republican in hollywood? Far from it. They're just not out front with their Politics. Some say it's becoming "chic" to be with the GOP.
I'll believe that when Richard Gere campaigns for Bush.
So why is Carrie Fisher sleeping with a gay man?
Maybe it was a Godfather sort of thing... substitute the horse's head for a gay Republican.
Maybe that gerbil up his butt was really an mini-elephant!
Hollywood Republican is an Oxymoron isn't it?
