But if you understand the article about the two of them being close friends, then the Gay references are kind of gratuitous. Seems these two were confidants of one another, not lovers. Sort of a mutual support society. In that context, perhaps they just liked to hang out together, including falling asleep at least in the same room, if not in the same bed. It doesn't compute with me, but loneliness and the need for human companionship probably could explain it.
