Children in pre-K programs across the state are 19 times more likely to be expelled than students in kindergarten through high school, a shocking new study shows. About nine out of every 1,000 pre-K tots in New York state are tossed from their programs, according to Yale University researchers.
By contrast, researchers found that just one in every 2,000 K-12 students in the state is expelled.
The study, "Pre-kindergartners Left Behind," to be released today, found that pre-K students are three times as likely to be expelled as kids in other grades across the nation.
Researchers did not collect data on what prompted the expulsions but told of kids getting the boot for everything from throwing tantrums to bringing water guns to class and cutting the wires on computer mouses

NYS already has the highest education taxes in the nation, but that is not enough. Each year, the school districts submit new school budgets averaging 7% higher than the previous one, despite hefty funding from federal and state agencies. Like a black hole, NYS Education has a insatiable appetite for more money.
Speak of the House, Sheldon Silver, has been the loudest and staunchest advocate for pre-K funding. He will read this report and proclaim .... "We need more money to correct this disparity."
As a former pre-k teacher, that number is far less than it should be. Kids growing up today are *brats* because their parents spoil them.

God forbid. Notice that the first thing they do is ask for more money, more support services, and more training and degree programs. I hate to say it, but preschool is a better place for the kids who get tossed. Usually it is because of poor parenting.
Why?

Today they expect the teachers to instill proper behavior, along with everything else.
Believe it or not, pre-school programs do work. Kids learn their numbers, colors, how to work, ect,ect, and how to behave/function in a socially acceptable manner.
I have seen way too many dysfunctional kids crawl under their desk and cry for mommy, urinate in class, refuse to behave, and just haven't learned how to function around other kids. They need to learn this when they are 4 & 5 not in 3rd grade. We all did and before we entered 1st grade. IT all starts in the home, you know.
Heaven forbid their report 'accidently' show that kids do actually do better and stay in school longer and benefit from more time at home with a loving mother or father caring for them. What a nightmare for those initiating the study to find the opposite of what they expected. You know what that means, 'Hurry, raise taxes and send more money!', so they can reach more kids, earlier than ever. And let the indoctrination begin.
Maybe they can talk more of the stay at home moms into rushing back to work (yes, some of us had no choice but to work) by reminding them to 'fulfill' themselves through work. (didn't the Nazis have some expression about joy through work?) Call Oprah, get those children in daycare! (end sarcasm)

Shhhh. The love and attachment are the main things we give that they have been unable to duplicate. (Well, also, routine, and opportunity for real, free play and opportunity to mirror behavior and interact with people of all ages and experience a variety of daily activities and interactions, I could go on...) No amount of money, no new program, no longer school day or earlier starting age will ever substitute for that. And, in fact, as their own work shows, does more harm than good. Most of us parents know this.
I'm shocked that the number is that low, but it does explain a lot.
And yet, they whine about not having enough money, monies that barely trickle down to the kids. They politely evade the question when asked about drop out rates or failures to test well on supposed grade level work (yet many of those same kids are on the honor roll in the new 'everyone gets an A system'). PA has long followed NY into the abyss of public school initiatives that fail miserably and suck down huge amounts of tax dollars and we are implementing locally, against the wishes of parents and many educators!, a full day kindergarten and mandatory preschool for 3 & 4 yr olds, soon to be full day mandatory as well. Our governor is trying the same techniques, thanks to the teachers unions that elected him, to try and bankrupt the entire state, as bankrupting the Philly school systems wasn't enough. I'm sure when it fails, the response will be more tax increases for the children.

Pre-k? My home will be pre-k.
Why, he just needs to be screened for ADHD and drugged. /sarcasm. And, yes, folks, I am aware that the truly ADD/ADHD do indeed need and benefit from medication. I just think that anytime a child, especially a boy, wiggles or looks out the window, the answer is medication and more funding for special programs.
I still remember a friend of mine who was a year behind me. He had been held back in kindergarten for talking too much.
Best way. But beware of those who wish to make it mandatory full-day.

I would think that the reason more are expelled is because pre-k programs are not mandatory. Thus, teachers and administrater are allowed to expel problem kids instead of making the other students suffer and get their education delayed. Since k-12 is mandatory, tbey have to keep problem kids in at the other student's expense. Perhaps, we should study what parents do with the kids after they are expelled. Are the bad kids reprimanded? Is it a wake up call to the parent that their kid has "issues". Or, are they going to act shocked when their kid is cuffed and stuffed in kindergarten, then sue the school.
Yes, here it is soon to be mandatory. I don't (but wish I did) have one that age. Many are opposed. Some like it, and many of them are the 'we like having kids but not actually parenting them' kind. Spending time with kids and the students I have, you see it all. You'll see! ;-)
I just signed up my son for a 1/2 day, 3 day a week pre k at a church near me. It got my family off my case. Boy did we go rounds, I used to teach kindergarten, and honestly it doesn't make a difference unless the kid is getting some sort of therapy (like speach, etc.) during it. My reasons for doing it are so he can make friends, learn to follow a bit of a schedule and get a nice bible lesson everyday with some nice kids. We are pretty isolated where we live and I would like him to get some buds, me too for that matter. :)
