There's this Nast political cartoon from the 1800s showing Catholic cardinals crawling ashore looking like alligators. Wow, I've never seen that before. Thank you for posting it. Do you know if it was ever published in Newspapers of the time?

That is one of many. The artist was quite famous. I think, he is one who took on the corrupt Tammany Hall and Boss Tweed with his editorial cartoons. He also created our modern concept of St. Nicholas.
Now if I could just think of his name......Thomas Nast!!!
This period of our history was a time of virulent anti Catholicism. And yes, it was in our our major and minor papers and in the hearts and on the lips of many of our people.
