Kerry's Yale Grades Similar to Bush's

BOSTON - Sen. John F. Kerry (news, bio, voting record)'s grade average at Yale University was virtually identical to President Bush's record there, despite repeated portrayals of Kerry as the more intellectual candidate during the 2004 presidential campaign.

Kerry had a cumulative average of 76 and got four Ds his freshman year — in geology, two history courses and political science, The Boston Globe reported Tuesday.

His grades improved with time, and he averaged an 81 his senior year and earned an 89 — his highest grade — in political science as a senior.

"I always told my dad that D stood for distinction," Kerry said in a written response to reporters' questions. He said he has previously acknowledged focusing more on learning to fly than studying.

Under Yale's grading system in effect at the time, grades between 90 and 100 equaled an A, 80-89 a B, 70-79 a C, 60 to 69 a D, and anything below that was a failing grade.

In 1999, The New Yorker magazine published a transcript showing Bush had a cumulative grade average of 77 his first three years at Yale, and a similar average under a non-numerical rating system his senior year.

Bush's highest grade at Yale was an 88 in anthropology, history and philosophy. He received one D in his four years, a 69 in astronomy, and improved his grades after his freshman year, the transcript showed.

Kerry, a Democrat, previously declined to release the transcript, which was included in his Navy records. He gave the Navy permission to release the documents last month, the Globe reported.

Kerry graduated from Yale in 1966, Bush in 1968.

Hilarious.

As if GPA had absolutely anything to do with intellect. Or leadership. Or wisdom, for that matter. Ivy Leaguers are over-rated from the jump anyway. If either Bush or Kerry had to compete without family ties, neither one would get accepted, especially today.

Kerry's grades were "similar", yet worse. If Bush's grades were worse, this headline would not read as it does.

Kerry had a cumulative average of 76...
...Bush had a cumulative grade average of 77 ...

Anyone want to bet that had these two been reversed, the headline would not have called them "similar", but would have instead said that Kerry's grades were better.

It's likely the author of this piece had LOTS of D's.....

I wonder what else was in Kerry's Navy records. He "released" the records to Boston Globe only. That looks a bit suspect.

Medved just explained that they CHANGED the way of grading in the midst of the last 2 years of Bush's time at Yale...and then, whomever wrote the story or analyzed his grades ASSIGNED the NEW scoring to the OLD scoring.....actually, Bush did MUCH better than Kerry at Yale. Typical MSM cr*p.

That's true for anyone applying to school. Especially if going to the same school as a parent did.

Cool. GPA related to family ties.

Similar to Bush's? Another example of the MSM twisting the truth. Lies, lies and more lies.

Rush said that his best class was french! What else?
One other thing as an Irish American, I don't see how in the world the dunces in Massachusetts looked at this guy and believed for a second that he was Irish. The fact that he is not is not important. The fact that he has been making up shiite all his life is.

GPA is only a measure of dedication to studies over a particular period and little else.

LOL! It must have an adverse effect. Mine was higher than theirs and I don't know a soul. :)
