U.S. Senator Chris Dodd Senator to Speak at the July Chamber Breakfast Meeting http://www.towntimes.com/articles/2005/07/21/news/local_news/news15.txt
Larry Marino, chairman of the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce, announced that the Chamber's Monthly Member Breakfast U.S. Senator Chris Dodd will be held on Monday, July 25, from 7:45 to 9am at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center in Cromwell. Middlesex Hospital is sponsoring the breakfast meeting.
Connecticut's Chris Dodd is a senior Democratic leader in the United States Senate. Chris Dodd is best known for bringing much-needed attention to children's issues. He formed the first children's caucus and spent almost a decade fighting to enact family leave legislation to ensure that parents don't have to choose between the job they need and the family they love. He also authored and enacted landmark legislation to ensure that our nation provides better access to safe and affordable childcare.
Dodd offered the first "pay as you go" budget in 1983 and played an important role in reasserting the fiscal discipline that for the first time since World War II has led to record budget surpluses. He also has long fought to reform our campaign finance laws and successfully authored and enacted legislation banning members of Congress from receiving speaking fees.
Dodd led a successful override of one of President Clinton's vetoes when he won approval for a bill to protect investors and curb frivolous lawsuits as Americans invest more of their savings in the stock market. A consistent leader on hi-tech issues who has sought to bring the benefits of the digital economy to all Americans, Dodd co-chaired a special committee on the Y2K problem and authored legislation which encouraged people to fix technology problems rather than fight them out in costly court battles. In fact, the New York Times called the law the single most significant accomplishment of the 106th Congress' first session, recognition mirrored by an award Dodd recently received from the Information Technology Industry Council as Legislator of the Year.
An ardent leader in the fight to better educate America's children, Dodd has consistently fought to expand and improve Head Start, and ultimately was honored as a national Head Start "Senator of the Decade" for his efforts. He helped write the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, worked to create after-school initiatives designed to keep children out of trouble and on the road to success, and has helped author measures to make higher education more affordable for working families. He was also instrumental in extending health insurance to 5 to 7 million of the nation's uninsured children and has consistently fought to support community health centers and initiatives aimed at child nutrition, maternal and child health, and infant mortality prevention. He also led the fight to modernize the Food and Drug Administration approval process for drugs and medical devices, getting innovative therapies to patients more quickly without compromising safety and effectiveness.
A consistent friend of law enforcement, firefighters and emergency response teams, Dodd fought for passage of the landmark 1994 crime bill, which put 100,000 new cops on the beat across the country, including more than 1,000 in Connecticut. He is a staunch supporter of the Brady Bill, which imposed a five-day waiting period on handgun purchases, and a supporter of the ban on deadly assault weapons. He authored a bill requiring safety locks on guns and fought successfully to prevent anyone convicted of domestic violence from owning a gun. He also recently authored a law to help local fire departments purchase new equipment and hire additional personnel.
A recent recipient of the Edmund S. Muskie Distinguished Public Service Award recognizing leadership in foreign policy, Dodd's record reflects his commitment to a strong national defense and his desire to build a more secure world. As a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he is a recognized expert on Latin and South America and has worked to foster peace, prosperity and democracy abroad.
Senator Dodd is currently a senior member of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee and is the senior Democrat on its Children and Families Subcommittee. He also is the senior Democrat on the Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Peace Corps and Narcotics. He serves on the Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, and is the senior Democrat on its Securities and Investment Subcommittee. He also is the senior Democrat on the Rules and Administration Committee.
Dodd's commitment to public service and human rights was instilled at an early age by his parents, the late Senator Thomas J. Dodd and Grace Murphy Dodd. Chris Dodd is the first Connecticut son to follow his father into the Senate and the youngest person ever elected to the United States Senate in Connecticut history. He is also the first Connecticut Senator popularly elected to four terms.
Senator Dodd lives in East Haddam with his wife, Jackie Clegg Dodd, and their daughter Grace, born September 13, 2001.
Cost to attend the breakfast is $17 for Chamber members and $27 for non-members. The breakfast will be held at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center in Cromwell. For more information, or to make your reservation, please contact the Chamber at 347-6924 .

Senator Dodd and human rights
RESPONSE
From: Miriam J. Masullo, Ph.D.

Senator Dodd was elected four times because the Republican Party leaders in Connecticut who hand pick challengers while contributing money to Dodd's campaign have made sure at the cost of abuse of power, corruption and the disintegration of democracy, that no serious candidate would be allowed to challenge Dodd.
You insult humanity and common decency by using the words Senator Dodd and human rights in the same sentence.
The man goes off fishing with Castro while children from Kenya are being taken by force to Cuba by Castro's slave drivers, while teachers' unions are not allowed to exist in Cuba, and young people, journalists and intellectuals suffer in Cuban jails far away from the luxury hotels where the Senator sells himself to one of the worst violators of human rights in the history of humanity.
This is a man who has used the sacred podium of the US Senate to defend a human rights violator. How could you?
You exercise nothing less than the prostitution of the written word.

So they don't have to go into waitressing to earn money for school.

Think: Paragraphs.

And write, 100 times: "Just because I post it, doesn't mean it's breaking news."

while teachers' unions are not allowed to exist in Cuba

Many, including me, in this Country feel that public employee unions and teachers unions specifically do more harm than good and should therefore be banned.

Chris Dodd is best known in most of the country for forming a waitress sandwich with Teddy The Swimmer Kennedy.

Senator DUD (D-CT) was also the co-bagman along with Don Fowler in 1996 when many illegal foreign campaign contriibutions were given to the DNC! However, because he was a member of the Bob and Billie Club (formerly U.S. Senate), he got a pass.
