Saddam's trial on live television
News.telegraph ^ | August 1, 2005 | Telegraph

Posted on 08/01/2005 11:43:37 PM PDT by KOZ.

The trial of Saddam Hussein will be shown on live television, Iraq's national security adviser said yesterday.

The trial will show the Arab and Muslim world "that this is going to be a fair, just trial with a defence counsel in there, with a proper prosecuting counsel as well there," Iraqi national security adviser Muwaffaq Rubaie told CNN. "And everybody will watch this trial live on television."

Earlier this month, an Iraqi tribunal filed the first charges against the deposed Iraqi leader over the 1982 killing of 143 residents of the village of Dujail, north-east of Baghdad, where he had been the target of a failed assassination attempt.

No date for his trial has yet been set.

gotch, i'm sure it would be unprecedented security. i'm more interested in seeing the meida/publics reaction to this. will it be for him or against him, will they just complain that he is being shown on TV like a circus animal?

because everyone knows, several years down the road, it will hailed as a great achievement (like nuremburg), but in the meantime what will the press etc say about it.

I see it as a disaster because it will definitely fuel the fanatics.I wonder if the jurors or whatever they are called in Iraq be afraid for their lives or that of their families?
Why on earth does it have to be televised? It should be handled without the circus atmosphere.

Well, since I'm just an ex-pat contractor, I'm not consulted about these things. ;-)

My own take is that they're probably televising it because so many families here (countless, really) have been shattered one way or another by Saddam's regime. I imagine the televising of this is largely for the Iraqi people who will be very interested in the proceedings. Plus, this process is all new to them.

I doubt the resulting execution will be televised.

But, you never know.
