Gore TV Lands In Central Park (Can you “sell out” a free event?)
NY Post ^ | 10/5/5 | Adam Buckman

October 5, 2005 -- A pep rally to be held tomorrow in Central Park for Al Gore's new cable channel for young people, Current TV, is sold out, according to the event's Web site.

Tickets were free...

Instructions on the site indicate that there might be some tickets at the entrance available to those who register online for a waiting list.

The event, called "Take Back TV," is scheduled to run from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Central Park's Rumsey Playfield, best known as the site of SummerStage.

Besides promoting the fledgling cable channel, Take Back TV is aimed at enlisting the participation of its young target audience.

Programming on Current TV, which is available here on Ch. 103 on Time Warner Cable, is partially dependent on video contributed by viewers. So-called "viewer-created content" comprises about 30 percent of all programming on Current, according to the channel.

To drum up needed support, Gore will be on hand Thursday to introduce musical performances by De la Soul, Fishbone, Slum Village and others. The former vice president is a co-founder of Current, which launched Aug. 1.

Last April, a similar event — held before Current launched — attracted an estimated 6,000 participants outside Current's San Francisco headquarters.

Another Take Back TV concert/rally is scheduled in Philadelphia on Oct. 20.

Gore will be on hand Thursday to introduce musical performances by De la Soul, Fishbone, Slum Village and others.

I wonder if Gore will whip out his Amos & Andy’s Kingfish voice that he usually reserves for the black churches. And he'll almost certainly do that "Herman-Munster-after-he-got-hit-in-the-head-with-a-shovel" dance he does when he’s getting down with the soul music.

I actually like De la Soul a little and Fishbone a lot. I just hope Tipper hasn't listened to their lyrics, or she'll pull the plug on the whole event. I would have went, but I can’t afford to buy free tickets in this George Bush economy. Besides, they’re “sold out”.

There’s just no stopping the guy!

What do they define as 'young people'? You have to be at least 18 to understand most of the shows, but anyone 18 or older will be bored to death by GoreTV. They must be doing forced busing from the schools to this event.

I miss my MTV NWI

Take it back from whom?

The conservatives, obviously.

Didn’t you ever notice how every show on television shoves the pro-gun, anti-abortion, pro-freedom, traditional family values agenda down your throat? There’s almost nothing else.

What exactly is a "pep rally" for a cable channel, anyway? Are they gonna have perky cheerleaders screaming, "Okay, everybody...watch TV!"

I'll wager that Algore's new channel won't do too well in his home state. It was, after all,the voters of the Volunteer State who were responsible for his having lost in 2000.

Any band that stands on stage next to Tipper PMRC Gore has already "sold out".

Why isn't this taught in school like McCarthyism?

It's not a pep rally, it's a photo op.

How much are the free tickets going for on Ebay?
