Kyodo News (Japan) | January 4, 2006

Posted on 01/04/2006 2:01:43 AM PST by HAL9000

M7.0 quake hits N. America

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 jolted North America at around 5:32 p.m. Wednesday Japan time, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The focus of the quake was some 30 kilometers under the seabed around the Gulf of California, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The quake may cause small tsunamis around its epicenter, but they will not bring about any damage, the agency said.

Well, it appeared that the 'psychics' were right on C2C. There was an earthquake in California...Gulf of California that did no damage! But an earthquake nonetheless! :-P

I didn't know there was a Gulf of California. I didn't feel anything, but we are already having unusually big waves down at the beach... before this news.

Strong earthquake hits off Mexico's Baja California coast

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - A strong earthquake struck early Wednesday off the Baja California peninsula in the Sea of Cortez, also known as the Gulf of California.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the 6.7-magnitude quake occurred at 12:32 a.m. PST and was centered 425 miles southeast of San Diego and 56 miles northeast of Santa Rosalia, Baja California.

The quake occurred at an estimated depth of 6 miles along an extension of the San Andreas fault, said John Bellini, a geophysicist with the USGS in Golden, Colo.

Bellini said USGS maps indicate that about 2 million people live in areas where the quake would have been felt and about 870,000 of those would have experienced moderate shaking. The population in areas where the shaking would have been most severe was "very sparse," he said.

"It was not enough to really cause anything significant damage-wise," Bellini said.
