It isn't enough that the whacked out religion of pieces is creating enough terrorists, the City of Ithaca wants to add more - provided at taxpayer expense.

I think you're missing something pretty crucial here. This is the U.S. State Department that is sponsoring this, not the City of Ithaca. Since that means you're among the taxpayers paying for this, you might want to vent your anger at the Secretary of State or her boss.

I have every confidence Ms. Howard has a long career at the NY Times ahead of her.

Unfortunately.

As the most liberal city in America,"Ithaca is the City of Evil."

Thank you for the very thorough explanation of Ithaca's cultural and political character.

ending Muslim scholars to 33 colleges and universities throughout America this spring in an effort to enrich understanding and correct misapprehensions about Islamic societies.

Correct misapprehensions? I'll be amazed if they can just point out something about Islam that isn't totally appalling.

"A government-sponsored program is giving Ithaca College students and faculty the opportunity to learn more about Islamic and Malaysian culture from Dr. Mohammed Zin Nordin, associate professor and dean of the communications school at Universiti Sains Malaysia."

Well...Isn't that just a wonderful thing for our government to do? Why don't they just invite the tyrant of Iran to speak there, too? I mean, he's a real person with warm, fuzzy thoughts and feelings to be expressed!

I would suggest that she read "A Cup of Trembling" by David Hunt. She will learn all about that wonderfully peaceful religion of Islam (Sarc). If that doesn't scare the stuffing out of her nothing will. Amen.

"Sara Howard, a sophomore ...with a double major in journalism and politics, said she's always wanted to take a class on Islam. "I'm excited, because we are starting at the basics. I don't know anything about any other country besides America..."

I am sure the admissions office at IC has a ready explanation for how someone who "don't know nuthin' 'bout nuthin'" got into their fine school.

They should send her first to nearby Canada. She will be surprised that there is not a line in the ground at the border, or that it is not colored red like on the maps.

For a moment there I was like: "Whaaaaa?!?! When has Greece become so concerned with teaching Muslim culture?" Then I saw, "Ithaca, NY" and it all fell into place. [sniker] ;)

FYI: You may already know this, but there is a fairly popular rock band called Avenged Sevenfold that recently released an album called "City of Evil."

I'm betting that it is very popular in Ithaca.

The Fulbright scholarship program, funded by Congress and administered by the State Department, is sending Muslim scholars to 33 colleges and universities throughout America this spring in an effort to enrich understanding and correct misapprehensions about Islamic societies.

Let your Congressman know how you feel about this program!

"I'm excited, because we are starting at the basics. I don't know anything about any other country besides America, which is really bad."-Sara Howard, a sophomore

I'll bet a dollar to a donut she really doesn't know much about American History, either.

I trust Ms Howard will learn about Asian values, in particular, that:

1) East Asians do not believe in the extreme form of individualism practiced in the West. We agree that every individual is important. However, he or she is not an isolated being, but a member of a nuclear and extended family, clan, neighborhood, community, nation and state.

2) East Asians believe in strong families. Divorce rates are much lower than those in the West, and Asians do not, as a rule, abandon their aged parents. They believe that the family is the building block of society.

3) East Asians revere education. Unlike the West, this is a value held not only by the elite but by all strata of society. Asian mothers would make any sacrifice to help their children excel in school.

4) East Asians believe in the virtues of saving and frugality.

5) East Asians consider hard work a virtue - the chief reason this region is outcompeting Europe.

6) East Asians practice national teamwork. Unions and employers view each other as partners, not class enemies.

7) There is an Asian version of a social contract between the people and the state. The government will maintain law and order, provide citizens with their basic needs for jobs, housing, education and health care. Governments also have an obligation to treat their people with fairness and humanity. In return, citizens are expected to be law-abiding, respect those in authority, work hard, save, and motivate their children to learn and be self-reliant. Most Asian governments do not pay unemployment benefits, partly because there is little unemployment and partly to avoid the Western disease of welfarism. Asian governments do not make welfare payments to unmarried women with dependent children because teenage pregnancy and illegitimate birth are, fortunately, rare in Asia.

8) In some Asian countries, governments have sought to make every citizen a stakeholder in the country. More than 90 percent of Singaporeans own their own homes. Singapore also has the world's highest percentage of citizens who own shares (50.5 percent, compared to 16.2 percent in Britain, and 11.7 percent in the United States). Each year, employees in the private and public sectors receive a performance-based bonus.

9) East Asians want their governments to maintain a morally wholesome environment in which to bring up their children. A recent survey found that most Singaporeans do not want magazines such as Playboy to circulate in the country. Recently, the democratically elected government in Seoul refused to allow Michael Jackson to perform in South Korea. There is no reason Asians must adopt the Western view that pornography, obscenity, lewd language and behavior, and attacks on religion are protected by the right of free speech.

10) Good governments in East Asia want a free press but, unlike the West, they do not believe that such freedom is an absolute right. We do not want our press to be mere mouthpieces of government. Yet we believe that the press must act responsibly. For example, it has no right to instigate trouble between racial, religious or linguistic groups, or between countries. We also insist that the press should give those whom it has attacked the right to reply.

(taken from http://www.iht.com/articles/1993/12/11/edkoh.php )

Let's see, apart from some aspects of point 1), all of point 6), and partically point 10), all are red state America values. Is Ms Howard going to turn out pro-life and pro-family when she garduates?

Guys, watch out. We may see New York turning into a bright red state in 25 years' time LOL.

Hmmm... so the terrorists have found a back door in Idiothaca. Teach American Values first.. on second thought, they would have to know something about that to teach it.

of yes they are, in a twisted way. From my post #35 I note that Malaysia is a strong adovate of Asian values and I posted a list of 10 points from an Asian value supporter. Now apart from a couple of points all read like red state America values. Restricting porn, slashing welfare, discouraging divorce and out-of-wedlock pregnancies, government promoting moral focus, tough on law and order...the list sounds repulsive to American liberals' "values", eh?

In other words, when Ms Howard graduates, she will help turn New Yawk into a red state LOL. ;-)

Ithaca might be all those things but mostly its a small town surrounded by beautiful Cayuga lake and farms and orchards......we spent many a July 4th at Cayuga lake at the state park, across from the falls.....we would set up our picnic area and then go up into the orchards and pick Bing cherries......I have terrific memories of that time and that area...............

Hehehe, they don't really know what they are adovating. They don't know that their brand of liberalism will end up with a moralist value (although not necessarily "American"). The list of 10 contains a lot of things that are like red state/traditional American values.

I wonder...when they wake up to this fact, will they push Dr Zin Nordin on an early plane home?
