Peter King: Immigration Bill Wouldn't Hurt Church (Exposes Cardinal Mahoney's Immigration Lie)

Rep. Peter King, R-NY, said Sunday that the immigration reform bill that he's co-sponsoring with Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wisc., would have no impact whatsoever on Catholic Church programs that minister to illegal immigrants.

"There's absolutely nothing in this bill that is going to put at risk any nun or priest or social worker or social agency," King told WABC Radio's "Religion on the Line."

"There's been language in our law for over 50 years saying it's wrong to aid and abet or encourage illegal immigrants to come into the country or stay in the country," King said. "And that's aimed solely at alien smuggling gangs. No one has ever, ever gone after any church or religious organization for that. And we've told that to the Catholic Conference."

The New York Republican said he was particularly disappointed that his bill has been distorted by Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahoney.

Citing what he called "increasing hostility toward immigrants," Cardinal Mahoney instructed the priests of his archdiocese last month to disobey the proposed law if it passes, saying it violated their obligation to the law of God. Last week Sen. Hillary Clinton picked up the cardinal's theme, saying the Sensenbrenner-King bill would "literally criminalize the Good Samaritan and probably even Jesus himself."

King fired back on Sunday, telling WABC: "I'd actually be curious to know what Jesus's position - how close that would be to Hillary's on abortion. But that's another story."

King blamed Democrats for another explosive aspect of the bill - a measure that would ratchet up the crime of illegal immigration from misdemeanor to felony status.

"There is a provision in the bill that makes it a felony to overstay your visa. But the reason for that is, 191 [House] Democrats voted to keep it that way.

I dont support the Bishops, but youve got to understand that the Bishops are acting upon conviction and morals, not constitutional law. It's their job to do that...while we may take the constitutional approach, they take the beatitude approach...

Don't put any money in the collection baskets for the next 3 months!

That is one of the most disgusting statements ive seen in recent days...Good idea! Deprive the Catholic Releif Services in India because some LA Bishops dont agree with you!

A good PR approach for the Republicans is to focus heavily on the smugglers who haul van-loads of aliens in for $$$.

Once this ugly side is hown, it's all over for the "amnesty" advocates.

Looking at the polls it appears that the liberals are with us on this one. The numbers indicate that a lot of them are voting in favor of raising illegal alien status to a felony.

What if they haul van-loads of aliens in for free?

People with that level of intelligence should be in their rightful place....stringing beads and making clay bunnies.

Shocking! (about the libs being with us on this one) Your PR approach is interesting.

I suggest that every idiot congress critter live down by the border for a month and see what's really going on with smuggling, car crashes and breaking & entering of homes by illegals. Many US citizens are living in fear.

Why are there Catholic Church programs that minister to illegal immigrants in the first place?

Given that the Catholic Church chooses to flout U. S. immigration law, a review of their tax-exempt status would seem in order.

I'd start a campaign video with some (easily obtained) shots of aliens sneaking across the border, and then go to videos of captured vans, trucks etc. where the "coyotes" are mass-smuggling illegals, packed like sardines in their vehicles.

This crosses political boundaries at the grass roots level, but it hasn't seemed to have hit home yet among our elected elite.

Should have been done a long time ago.

If the Mexican government starts hauling them over in vans to get rid of them, but not charging any money, would that be okay with you?

And if some charity worker thinks he's doing God's work by smuggling people into this country, should we ignore it?

So much for Congress making no laws effecting the establishment of religion.

You missed my point by 180 degrees.

I, obviously, failed to make myself clear. If I were a liberal I would be looking for someone to blame for that.

Gimme a break. You sound like the kids in Catholic school who were told to "give to the missions" and were too naive to know how the money was really spent.

BTW, there's a boatload of Vatican art treasures and Church real estate around the world that could feed a good chunk of the poor people on this planet.

According to Tom Tancredo 11/15/05 Senator Bennett, at the behest of Mormon lobbyist, snuck a provision into Title 8, Section 1324, U.S. Code that now makes it Federal Law that any one claiming to be a religious group can enable, conceal, harbor or transport illegal aliens if they claim to be a minister or missionary. If I understand this correctly, now not even Homeland Security could go after anyone claiming to be a religious group.

Cardinal Baloney is a crook who needs illegal aliens to keep filling the collection plates. Baloney is a liberal who has always cared more about scratching the backs of union bosses and big city politicos than in defending the unborn and preaching the gospel.

The Catholic Church's lands should be confiscated and turned into detention centers for illegals if it chooses to keep inciting rebellion.
