I (cf_river_rat) have the privilege of working in South Carolina this week and was honored to be the guest of FReeper flib and her cohort, lurker “CCAW”, at their weekly vigil countering some aged hippies’ pathetic attempt at demoralizing America’s brave warriors. These ladies have been countering the sad efforts of the America-hating left in Columbia for the better part of a year now, and their perseverance is exceptional. If only 25% of FReepers could be as doggedly determined as these two!

It was a beautiful spring evening in central South Carolina as a few dedicated soldier supporters faced off against a handful of misguided military maligners from Women In Black and Carolina Peace Resource Center.
I showed up at the designated parking area just before five o’clock, and waited a few minutes for flib to arrive. We unloaded some great signs from her vehicle and headed over to the SC State House. On the one-block hike we displayed our signs and flags, and were greeted with enthusiastic thumbs-up and honks of support from passers-by.
Upon our arrival at the State House I was found the usual suspects – eight or nine leftover hippies trying to relive their misspent youth. Predictably, they carried signs bearing the footprint of the great American chicken, “Bring Them Home Now”, Bush Lied, et al. Just as predictably, there was not one American flag among them.
Within minutes flib’s fellow fighter, lurker “CCAW”, arrived with her two beautiful daughters in tow. We set up on the sidewalk in front of the appeaseniks, effectively blocking their access to any soldiers from nearby Fort Jackson who may be driving by. The honks of support, smiles, waves, and thumbs-up we got from passing motorists was heartwarming.
Soon the very reason we participate in this type of demonstration was made manifest. A US Army buck sergeant in BDUs came over to shake our hands and thank us for being out there to counter the warrior-haters diatribe. I shouted at the motley crew behind us an invitation to come shake this brave young man’s hand and thank him for his service. Their only response was to answer “We have a PERMIT to be out here!” I responded “no one has asked you to leave”, and thankfully they were quiet once again. They did not avail themselves of the opportunity to come thank the sergeant – I was surprised since one of their signs said “Support the Troops – Bring Them Home Now”. I guess that sign was all the support they could muster.

About 5:30 I left flib and CCAW at their post and moved to the other side of the leftists in a flanking maneuver. A fellow crossed the street in front of me and after reading my sign (HONK to Support Iraqi Freedom) he stated “Yeah, we’re sending them to meet allah aren’t we?”. I didn’t bother to respond. Now that we had the appeasers flanked the honks were practically continuous, and it was obviously getting on the unwashed peaceniks’ nerves. As if that wasn’t enough, I also shouted over at our adversaries “Hey, did you moonbats burn your flag?” a couple of times. Those liberals, they have no sense of humor!
Flib walked over to join me and we enjoyed some fellowship for a while, getting acquainted. Eventually the fellow mentioned above came over in an attempt to engage us in dialogue, and he opened the discourse with the statement that he “used to be a Republican but was now a liberal.” He informed us that he once supported Goldwater and now supports Hillary. Once GOP, now NAACP. Once capitalist, now socialist…you get the picture. Anyone who has FReeped will not be surprised to learn that I responded “Sir, do you have Alzheimer’s?” He took this pretty well, so I followed it up with “With all the respect due someone of your age sir, I must say you have lost your mind!”
This “gentleman” stated that BUSH LIED to us about WMD to lead us into war, to which I responded “We all know that the WMDs were removed through Syria while we played cat and mouse through the UN”. Well that was it. This man came UNGLUED. He glanced furtively between flib and me saying “You stupid F*****S!” the he looked straight at me and said “I’ll kick your @$$ - I’ll kick your @$$” so of course I poked my chest out and replied “Go ahead. I’d like to see you try.” He flew us the bird and practically ran across the street as flib and I taunted him with catcalls of “Alzheimer’s” and “Take your meds!”

The miserable miscreants broke up their picket promptly at six o’clock, so we stayed on a little longer to show support for our troops, and enjoyed the enthusiasm of motorists on the street in front of us. We decided to take a couple of pictures, and one of the Bush bashers offered to take a group photo for us - what a kind gesture! After receiving his assurance that he wouldn’t break my camera he took the photo below. After seeing the overwhelming support for our side maybe he decided if he can’t beat ‘em he’d better join ‘em!

On our way back to our vehicles we were approached by a fellow pedestrian who said he was with our soldiers and their mission, and was glad we were there to defend our military. After trading contact info and saying goodbye we split up and headed our separate ways, glad we had been able to encourage at least one soldier, and rattle some leftists’ cages.

If you really want to make their heads asplode, next time, just point to that obelisk and flag behind them and remind them forcefully that they're demonstrating in front of the SOUTH CAROLINA CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS' MEMORIAL! Then just watch 'em scatter like cockroaches when they realize they're within sight range of an eeeeeeeeeeeeevil Confederate Flag! :)
