KY: High School Prayer Axed After Muslim Complaint

Source: ASSOCIATED PRESS

SHELBYVILLE - The principal of Shelby County High School said the school will not have formal prayer at graduation exercises next month after receiving a complaint from a student and the American Civil Liberties Union of Kentucky.

Principal Gary Kidwell met Monday with the Board of Education and a lawyer as residents held a prayer vigil outside. Tuesday, Kidwell said the school will break from the tradition of student-led invocations and benedictions at graduation June 2.

The school "will be compliant with the law and also provide a respectful and dignified program for all students," he said.

Traditional prayers at a school banquet and an awards ceremony also will not be held, he said.

Last week, a court ordered a Russell County High School student who had been designated to pray at graduation not to do so. Students rose on their own and recited the Lord's Prayer during the principal's remarks. The student who had been designated to lead the prayer included religious messages in her remarks to graduates.

Arshiya Saiyed, 17, who is Muslim, identified herself Tuesday as the Shelby County student who filed the ACLU complaint. She said other students share her view, a contention echoed by Kidwell.

Arshiya said she understands that student speakers at Shelby County also might include a prayer in their remarks, but she hopes they will respect her objections to the formal prayer.

How muslims treat other when they are in power...

Saudi Arabia - Conversion by a Muslim to another religion is punishable by death. Bibles are illegal. Churches are illegal.

Yemen - Bans proselytizing by non-Muslims and forbids conversions. The Government does not allow the building of new non-Muslim places of worship.

Kuwait - Registration and licensing of religious groups. Members of religions not sanctioned in the Koran may not build places of worship. Prohibits organized religious education for religions other than Islam.

Egypt - Islam is the official state religion and primary source of legislation. Accordingly, religious practices that conflict with Islamic law are prohibited. Muslims may face legal problems if they convert to another faith. Requires non-Muslims to obtain what is now a presidential decree to build a place of worship.

Algeria - The law prohibits public assembly for purposes of practicing a faith other than Islam. Non-Islamic proselytizing is illegal, and the Government restricts the importation of non-Islamic literature for distribution.

Jordan - Has the death penalty for any Muslim selling land to a Jew.

Sudan - Conversion by a Muslim to another religion is punishable by death.

Pakistan - Conversion by a Muslim to another religion is punishable by death. Bans proselytizing by non-Muslims. Christians regularly put in prison for charges of blasphemy.

Qatar - Islamic instruction is compulsory in public schools. The government regulates the publication, importation, and distribution of non-Islamic religious literature. The government continues to prohibit proselytizing of Muslims by non-Muslims.

Malaysia - Under Malaysian law, any convert to Christianity must apply to a shariah (Muslim law) court to legally renounce Islam. Many Christians prefer to remain silent converts rather than take their battle to the shariah courts, where apostasy or conversion out of Islam is punishable by whipping, fines, imprisonment and--in the most extreme application--death.

Actually, I think a student should offer a prayer during their remarks that goes something along the line of "Dear God, please save us from the Muslims among us who hate us so much that they wish to remove our religious freedom from us."

the ACLU should be ignored wherever they are and try to act.
Any court orders that are inspired by ACLU actions should also be ignored. Let them try and arrest some people based
on ACLU inspired judgments , see what happens .
Just ignore the entire process that is propagated by the ACLU.

Harder to pull off.

All christians, regardless of denomination, know the Lord's Prayer ("tresspasses" vs. "sins", being the only difference).

"The students should simply recite the Lord's prayar when the principal starts talking."

AGREED. Perhaps the principal could even have a little pause after clearing his or her throat a couple times... then some spontaneous prayer from the crowd... could be fit right in.
