White House endorses Cannon
Deseret Morning News(Utah) ^ | 6/19/06

PROVO — Laura Bush is campaigning for Utah Congressman Chris Cannon. With both Cannon and challenger John Jacob poised to release television ads, the first lady recorded a phone message last week asking Republicans in Utah's 3rd District to vote for Cannon in the party's June 27 primary. "We need Chris in Congress so he can continue securing our borders, protecting our families and helping make the president's tax relief permanent," Bush said in the message, which hasn't been released yet

Word of the White House endorsement leaked to the Jacob camp over the weekend through a Republican Party channel. "The president apparently is going to come out to support Chris," Jacob said Sunday during a debate on KUTV. The first lady could be a powerful ally among Republicans in Utah, where President Bush's approval ratings are higher than nearly anywhere else in the nation. He had a 65 percent approval rating last month among voters registered in the 3rd District, according to a poll done by Dan Jones & Associates

"My guess is she's over 70 percent," Jones said Sunday. "That will help Cannon. How much, we really don't know. Sometimes you can really translate popularity and sometimes you can't." A White House endorsement is rare in aprimary, Jones said. "It's unusual for the White House or influential members of Congress to get involved in the primary election of a state Congressional district." Jacob campaign consultant Hayden Hill called the move a sign the race is tightening. "Obviously (Cannon) knows he's vulnerable, and he's bringing out the big guns," Hill said. The first lady's message is a part of a Cannon campaign strategy to record dozens of local leaders and use the recordings in phone calls to likely voters. Bush's message will go to a broader range of potential voters. The first lady's message is short, and campaign manager Nathan Rathbun said the Cannon campaign has not decided when to start dialing up phone numbers with it.

Also this ringing endorsement from good conservative James Sensenbrenner for Chris Cannon.

Again, it's the new, detailed Cannon - a good thing, says House Judiciary Chairman James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis. "What I can say is, in Congress there are workhorses and showhorses," Sensenbrenner says. "Chris Cannon is the workhorse. Workhorses get things done in Congress."

Misnomer all around.

Anyway, it's not President Bush going after a Congressman(Chris Cannon) with a 100% ACU rating, it's the tancredo/bay buchanan PAC.

Wow, Bush must be pretty determined to keep his "point man on comprehensive immigration reform" in the house of representatives. You don't usually see the executive branch in these primaries.

Doubleplusungood. Into the memory hole with that.

LOL! I Knew you Cannon haters would go apopletic and post all types of innuendo.

BTW, Chris Cannon's 2004 GOP primary opponent, Matt Throckmorton, who made immigration his primary issue is now on Cannon's side.

WASHINGTON, DC—Congressman Chris Cannon (R-UT) and Matt Throckmorton, chairman of Cannon’s Immigration Advisory Committee, today sent the following open letter:

BTW , I guess you all could get Bay Buchanan to do phone messages, that's of course if you think the rhetorical style of Darth Vader wins elections.

His 100% rating from the ACU is not innuendo, but a fair and objective stance of Cannon's defense of conservative issuess.

Why you wish to get rid of him is beyond me, other than you beleive your own and untrue innuendo that Chris Cannon is un-American.

The American Conservative Union surely doesn't think so.

Non sequitur and red herring rolled into one. Impressive.

"We love immigrants in Utah. And we don't oftentimes make the distinction between legal and illegal. In fact I think Utah was the first state in the country to legislate the ability to get a drivers license based on the matricula consular and of that I am proud."

Quote, not innuendo.

Well you beleive what you want to beleive, I'm not going to change your or tancredo/bay buchanan's mind that Chris Cannon is the boogeyman, while I am going to believe such good and solid conservatives with track records such as James Sensenbrenner and such conservative organizations such as the American Conservative Union.

"The American Conservative Union surely doesn't think so."

The ACU bases their ratings on a few specific votes important to them. Comparing the conservatism of Chris Cannon to that of someone like Tom Tancredo is tantamount to comparing day and night.
