Mad Dogs and Liberals: The Moral Equivalence of the New York Times

The New York Times op-ed page has a feature today called 'A First Step Back From the Brink.' As the Times describes it:

"With chaos threatening to engulf Lebanon, the need to resolve the conflict in the Middle East has rarely seemed so urgent. The Op-Ed editors went to seven experts with experience in the region, asking each of them what should be the first step toward defusing the crisis."

Richard Perle is one of the contributors, and makes the case that "Israel must see the current fighting through to a conclusion that is unambiguously a defeat for Hezbollah and Hamas." But most if not all of the other contributors call for an immediate cessation of hostilities, including Judith Kipper of the Council on Foreign Relations who wants to negotiate with Hezbollah and Hamas and describes them as 'political parties and social welfare organizations', albeit with 'military wings.'

Then there's a Columbia professor of Arab studies, Rashid Khalidi, who blames the problem largely on Israel's 'occupation of Palestinian lands' and condemns the US and Israel for their allegedly 'empty bombast about terrorism.'

The contributors are all partisans of varying stripes. But what is most significant is the way the Times itself has framed the issue with its editorial cartoon. For the Old Gray Lady, there is no difference between the rejectionists and Islamo-fascists of Hamas and Hezbollah, and the people of Israel who seek to survive in a hostile Arab sea. They are all simply mad dogs, literally armed to the teeth.

This is moral relativism at its most abject.

Here's the Times' editorial cartoon that frames the section.

"The Op-Ed editors went to seven experts with experience in the region"

does anyone else see how the lack of a peace negotiations and conflicts would cause these very same people their jobs if they couldn't keep it going?

I am saying they are a bunch of self centered instigators to the whole thing

Good morning, Mark. The Times' pontification editorials, always calling for more talk, and "stern demands" on Hezbollah, etc..NEVER say what to do when Hezbollah ignores their requests..

Question for ya..which is worse?..watching the Today show every day, or reading the Times editorial page?

Good question. I'm going with the Times. Some balance occasionally sneaks into Today, whereas the Times is a never-ending assault on all that is right and good!

Perfect! Thanks for posting. And what better way to pass the time with a beautiful girl in a bikini than discussing Kant and Schopenhauer? ;-)

The New York Times assigned the same moral equivalence between the U.S and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Nothing new here.

Fifty years of appeasment of haters and lovers of war has not only delayed the inevitible but ensured that when the convulsion comes it will be orders of magnitude worse.

When people howl for war and slaughter--GIVE IT TO THEM, in spades, until they ask meekly and politely that you stop.

If you see someone looking at a paper box containing the NYT be sure to warn them to "Step Back From the Stink."

"wings"? --- I'd say more like tentacles.

"Judith Kipper of the Council on Foreign Relations who wants to negotiate with Hezbollah and Hamas "

I think Condi should appoint Kipper as Negotiator In Chief representing Hezbollah and Hamas, and say, "Judith, call me when you get Hezbollah and Hamas to the table."

I heard on Fox & FRiends this morning that the NYT's revealed another bit of information regarding our relationship with Israel.

We had a contract with Israel to sell them some type of missile. We decided to make it a rush order and are sending them before the original delivery date.

NYT's reported from an unidentified source in the administration that we are sending them early.

The Times is one arm of the Big Brother MSM, which is "watching out" for us and making sure we get the "correct slant" on world events.
