Oscar-winning Titanic composer James Horner has created a new theme for CBS Evening News With Katie Couric, which will debut September 5.
The network declined to release a snippet of the music Wednesday.
"It's memorable when you hear it, and it feels like it fits us," said Rome Hartman, executive producer of CBS Evening News.
Horner won Oscars for best original score for Titanic and best song for "My Heart Will Go On" from Titanic. He also has received nominations for his work in Braveheart, Apollo 13, and An American Tail.
The existing theme has been in place since 1991. CBS News said there have been only four themes used in the history of the show, which started using music in 1962 when Walter Cronkite took the anchor chair.
It's one of many changes that are happening to CBS Evening News in advance of Couric's first broadcast. The newscast's staff has been out of the studio/newsroom for months, using an auxiliary studio for the broadcast and working from a space off the newsroom cafeteria at the West 57th Street Broadcast Center. Staffers have come to calling it the "Newseteria."
The new set and anchor desk will arrive next week, and the rest of the workspace also is being assembled.
"It's not just the set. It's the newsroom that's being rebuilt," Hartman said Wednesday. "So a lot of these things, you can't do one thing until you've done others."
Hartman said it will be ready for the September 5 debut.
"People are working like crazy, and I've been impressed with the pace of the work," Hartman said.
Meanwhile, Couric is hard at work working on the bigger-picture parts of the broadcast as the staff puts out a daily newscast with current anchor Schieffer. Because there isn't a set, there haven't been rehearsals.
"We're very focused on editorial stuff, on stories, on brainstorming and thinking about the broadcast," Hartman said. "But what people would recognize as rehearsals, they haven't happened yet."

Couric gets theme similar to Titanic.
Sometimes the jokes just write themselves
Putting lipstick on a pig (the newscast, not Katie).
I vote for "Send in the Clowns." Any other ideas?
Putting lipstick on a pig (both the newscast & Katie).
How about "Lies" by the Knickerbockers?
Todays Laura Igrahms listener voted overwhelmingly for "send in the clowns" for the new theme song.
That's the problem, they are not focused on News! How 'bout sticking to the facts.
The Sex Pistols Liar might fit :)
Liar
Lie lie lie lie liar you lie lie lie lie
Tell me why tell me why
Why d'you have to lie
Should've realised that
Should've told the truth
Should've realised
You know what I'll do
You're in suspension
You're a liar
Now I wanna know know know know
I wanna know why you never
Look me in the face
Broke a confidence just to please
Your ego should've realised
You know what I know
You're in suspension
You're a liar
I know where you go everybody you know
I know everything that do or say
So when you tell lies
I'll always be in your way
I'm nobody's fool and I know all
'Cos I know what I know
You're in suspension you're a liar
You're a liar you're a liar
Lie lie lie lie lie lie lie lie
Lie lie lie lie liar you lie lie lie lie
I think you're funny you're funny ha ha
I don't need it don't need your blah blah
Should've realised I know what you are
You're in suspension you're in suspension
You're in suspension you're a liar
You're a liar you're a liar
Lie lie
I wonder if they'll have breaking stories about PMS. And maybe Celine Dion can sing the theme song...
Katy Couric is going to flop so bad. Nobody will take her seriously as an anchor. And her politics is the same old leftism from CBS. She'll last about 5 years tops; her ratings will get worse every year.
....how about the theme song to "Captain Kangaroo"...
Five months tops (a year at the outside, unless CBS is just idiotically obstinate ... well now, maybe five years after all!).
Someone should watch and see how much time is spent on NEWS and how much on OPINION and fluff. Just for one show... any volunteers??
Sink the Bismark
There's Got to be a Morning After
The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald
I can't stomach CBS and Couric for that long. Yuck
Lightfoot ping!
...I'd rather have a root canal.
Nah. Not Captain Kangaroo.
I vote for the theme song from "Leave it to Beaver".
Let's all tune in for the theme song and before she can open her mouth we all go click.
