WASHINGTON, Aug. 10, 2006 -- As part of its 100th anniversary celebration, a pain reliever manufacturer is honoring the hard-working Americans, including servicemembers, who make the United States great.

“Our 100th year celebration is about the hard-working people who built this country and helped make life less painful for us all in their own way,” Warren Brackin, associate brand manager for BC Powder, said. “Certainly a big portion of that, throughout the past 100 years, has been our servicemen and women. They’ve undoubtedly taken many a BC Powder.”

Partnering with the Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes, BC is honoring the troops by including one of the coalition’s “Hero Band” bracelets in each 50-count value pack of BC Powder, Brackin said. BC purchased about 312,000 bands from the coalition.

The Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes is a member of the Defense Department’s America Supports You program, which highlights grassroots and corporate efforts to honor U.S. military members and their families.

Packages containing the bands are on store shelves in the southeastern portion of the country, BC’s primary distribution area. They were shipped through July, he said. Company officials anticipate they will be available through the end of September, or as long as supplies last.

A portion of the proceeds from each sale of the special packages, about $45,000 total, will go to the coalition, Kim Michelson, a coalition spokeswoman, said. The donation will help fund the group’s programs, which ease financial hardships resulting from the care, treatment and recovery of severely wounded veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan and their families.

“Promotions like this are truly win-win for the companies involved and, in this case, the wounded (servicemembers),” Michelson said. “BC Headache Powder was able to commemorate their 100th year anniversary, and in doing so, assist so many injured (servicemembers).”

Created in Durham, N.C., BC Powder is now manufactured in Memphis, Tenn., by GalaxoSmithKline. While the company’s focus has always been on real people, a tribute to servicemembers seemed especially appropriate for the company’s 100th anniversary, Brackin said.

“This Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes partnership is one that’s kind of near and dear to our heart because of the significance of the coalition’s mission and how that fits in with what we believe and feel strongly about here at BC Powder,” Brackin said. “(Servicemembers) are high on the list of people that have given their lives and their time and their energy to make life less painful for all of us back home.”
