The falls may not have been turned off for cosmetic purposes as these stories would have you to believe--Loving ficticious honeymooners, tourists at the brink railing, or not.
Niagara's hydroelectric industries--headed up by Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation's Electrometallurgical Works, were the free world's largest supplier of Uranium metal--all in complete secrecy and only revealed a few years ago. That's the same stuff they used at Los Alamos and those other nasty bomb making places. That story never did seem to fit in with the PR brochures made for the honeymooners, tourists and other visitors to Niagara. Hard to sell both at once, openly.
Since 2000, extensive research indicates that massive amounts of radioactive materials were handled, refined and manufactured only a mile or so upstream from the American Falls and along the industrial corridor known as Buffalo Avenue and elsewhere in the city. There's more to this strange story that I will happily post here as I can. The writer Greg Mitchell (unknown to me--a lifelong NF,NY, newspaper reader and longtime contributor) may not have cared much about the secondary truth--when the primary truth was even worse and being thoroughly covered, not reported, but up.
Since when does the US Army Corps of Engineers do a cosmetic project only six months after the Viet Nam TET Offensive on Jan.1, 1969? Why was there only one government contractor (now a big.mil.ind. nuclear cleanup company--37 years later) that did the job dewatering the falls and worked day and night, 24/7 hrs.?
This is one story for the history books--that was written out of the history books the first time around.
More to come about this story within a story, wrapped in another story that was written as a story under false pretense to begin with.
