Listeners’ IQs bring Severin back to Boston (not poor ratings in syndication)
The Boston Herald ^ | 10/09/2006 | Jessica Heslam

He wasn’t canned and his syndicated radio show didn’t bomb.

Jay Severin says he missed the energy and “IQ” of his Boston audience and yukking it up during the afternoon commute.

Starting tomorrow at 3 p.m., Severin returns solely to Boston radio, back to his afternoon drive-time gig at Greater Media Inc.’s WTKK-FM (96.9), after a near nine-month run in syndication.

The controversial host reportedly inked a seven-year deal worth more than a million a year with Greater Media, making him one of the highest paid - if not the highest - local radio hosts in the country.

In an interview with the Herald, Severin said he left WTKK last year after more than five years because he was lured by the “bright lights, big city” offer of a syndicated gig with CBS Radio-managed Westwood One.

But Severin admitted this week that syndication “wasn’t all it was cracked up to be.”

“I didn’t enjoy evenings. I really missed the idea of belonging to this afternoon audience in New England. That’s when my energies are highest - it’s when I perform best,” said Severin, whose 7-to-10 p.m. syndicated show was picked up by WTKK.

Severin said the night audience wasn’t as engaged as his old afternoon listeners.

“Without a knock at any of those other audiences, they frankly didn’t have the energy, the IQ and the imagination of the Boston audience,” Severin said. “There was a discernable difference. It wasn’t the same.”

He was on here in the Twin Cities in syndication. Never did like him much. We have plenty of local talk guys, and Severin is way too libertarian for my tastes.

Good riddance to him.

What happened to Michael Graham? Did the muzzies finally take him down?

I used to listen to Jay but he went nuts over the war and demagogued dead soldiers and marines just as bad as John Murtha. He used to talk about reasoned and rational debate and discussion but he resorted to shouting callers down and hanging up on them when they didn't agree with his "I hate the war fests". He lost credibility with me when he resorted to the tactics of the left.

If you ever listen to WMAL, Michael Graham was not fired for his comments about the muzzies. He was fired for doing something else, behind the microphone.

Tee hee, oh how the spin finds it's way around. WOR hired Ellis Hennican. He got NO ratings to notice, so they syndicated his show.

The media just doesn't know which way to turn.

They're moving Graham up to the evening shift. I used to like Severin, since he first got me into talk radio, but for the same reasons you give I got fed up with him. I can still get Hannity on the AM station in ManchVegas.

I found his discussions of Iraq to be childish. Kept talking about when the police go in a house with a warrant and find out there are no drugs, they don't get to stay. So we have to leave Iraq because we didn't find WMD. He didn't seem to appreciate the difference between his analogy and a strategic oil producing nation of 50 million human beings in the heart of the Middle East.

If he wanted to go with the analogy he should have stated that the house was owned by a drug lord who was holding hudreds hostage with hundreds more burried in the backyard. Jay's analogy IS the law enforcement approach favored by the Clintons.

If that's his best, I'd hate to see his worst. Severin is a libertine crackpot. I'll stick with Howie.

I remember one of Jay's spectacular on-air flameouts about 10 years ago.

He was sititng in for someone. Now, who? -- I don't remember. I think it was Howie. Maybe Brodnoy?

He made a point how he loved Boston. "Oh, Boston!" Then he proceeded to discuss ... three guesses.

- 1995 shutdown of the government?
- GOP's inability to field a presidential candidate of pre-retirement age?
- Clinton's exploitation of Oklahoma City bombing?

No, no, and no. He said, let's' discuss whores. In an intelligent city whores are very intelligent. An intelligent whore... etc., etc., for several segments. One thig that stuck in his mind is that men are attracted to whores in the same sense in which like dogs they'd eat a pizza off the floor at a keg party sooner than locate the proper fork at a black tie dinner.

It was quite a spectacle. I don't think I ever heard from him since then, till now.

When I lived there, I recall Jay ourperforming Howie. I like Severin, found him very entertaining, albeit racist. Anyone who even sounded black was treated like crap, instantly, whether they agreeed with him or not.

On more than one ocassion, I remember Severin announcing the name of the caller, then going on for a minute about how "xxxxxxx" is such a babe name, and how he dated the most beautiful woman named "xxxxxxx", then the caller speaks and it's a ten year old girl. Talk about foot in mouth, LOL!

I do like listening to Severin, but when he starts in on being his own biggest fan, and gloating about his accolades, I change the station. Howie's modesty is one of his best traits, IMO.

"When I lived there, I recall Jay ourperforming Howie."

Correct.

"I like Severin, found him very entertaining, albeit racist. Anyone who even sounded black was treated like crap, instantly, whether they agreeed with him or not."

Says that he was arrested many times during Civil Rights protests. Not sure how one would check that claim...

He is very wary of muslims and doesn't hide it at all.
