Berbick, 51, suffered a gaping head wound in the attack in his native Norwich village, 146 miles (91 km) east of Kingston, and was pronounced dead at the Port Antonio Hospital, police said. They said the assailant was carrying a weapon such as a machete or hatchet that cut a deep “chop wound.”

"Trevor Berbick (August 1, 1955 - October 28, 2006) was a Heavyweight boxer whose professional career spanned from 1976 until 2000. He briefly held the WBC version of the Heavyweight title in 1986, before losing it to Mike Tyson in his first defense. He is also noted for being the last man to fight Muhammad Ali, winning their 10-Round contest in Nassau, the Bahamas on December 11, 1981, by unanimous decision."

Imagine that. Jamaica is a nice place if you never leave the confines of a resort. As soon as you leave, watch out!

No more banana republics for Barnacle.

Uppercut?

Perhaps the machete-wielder was a southpaw.

Trevor Berbick had a crazy, mixed up life.  I recall several allegations of physical and sexual assault in his past. He WAS a big, strong raw talent.

His two best hi-lite tapes:
Maybe you could add the video of Larry Holmes chasing Berbick out of a building back in the mid '80s with Holmes jumping across the hood of a car.

Like I said, Berbick had a crazy, mixed up life.

Seems to the the fate of most boxing -- heck, sports -- champions, once their moment in the sun has passed.

They dont have Machete or Hatchet control laws in the Jamaica?

Maybe was this a licensed Machete operator?

The UN could start enforcing some Machete control laws.

First the Hootsies, Tootsies, and now Jamaicans. Where will this end?

Machetes are no joke. They are a very affective weapon. The Spaniards coerced the Filipinos to use them against the American forces 100 years ago.

A friend of mine just got back from doing missionary work in Haiti. He said one of the most disconcerting parts of being there was that the population in general wanders around toting machetes.

I'm glad that I didn't see that in Jamaica.

They do up in the hills - or "The Bush" as they call it. At least they did when I was there in the '70s.... Mon. But really, what's the difference between that and packin' heat? None. When we hit the bush the first thing we did was purchase machettes.

I should add - Why? 'Cause everybody else had them.
