UPDATE: No Foul Play Suspected in Missing Family (CNet Editor, Wife & Kids)

PORTLAND, Ore. Dec 2, 2006 (AP) — Authorities said Saturday that new clues in their search for a San Francisco family who went missing a week ago during a vacation in Oregon show no indication of foul play.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said a search of James and Kati Kim's credit history showed they had stopped for dinner Nov. 25 in Roseburg, about 160 miles south of Portland and 65 miles northeast of Gold Beach. The Kims and their two children had reservations at a lodge in Gold Beach but never arrived.

"We don't have any indication of foul play," Sgt. Roger Loomis told KATU-TV. "They were in Roseburg, they had dinner and they left, and that's about the only information we have right now."

Someone reported seeing the family's vehicle in the same area as the restaurant, according to the sheriff's office.

The family saw friends in Portland on Nov. 25 and then headed toward home after a Thanksgiving trip to the Pacific Northwest.

Searchers have been combing Oregon highways and byways using snow machines and helicopters. The couple have two children, Penelope, 4, and Sabine, 7 months.

What's a snow machine and how would that help in looking for them?

I'm thinking ski-doo (a jet ski for snow), and you can cover a LOT of ground on one in a few hours

What about the credit history from Nov. 26 through Dec. 2?

That's a pretty bad headline.

"No indication of foul play" and "No Foul Play Suspected" don't mean the same thing.

Gotta wonder why they haven't employed the use of this:

The WAPA helicopter is equipped with an infrared device which will be used for its heat seeking capability. The helicopters are being used to carry searchers into the back country and conduct aerial searches.

They might, but that's called a sno-cat. Thy're used mostly for grooming ski runs etc. A bit wide and ungainly for scooting through the Oregon woods, don'tcha think?

"No indication of foul play" and "No Foul Play Suspected" don't mean the same thing.

Since they haven't found them yet, they have to go with the latter, I suppose.

People with kids that young don't just "take a longer route" on their vacation without telling someone.

Well, I was thinking they could use it in the wide open spaces- it appears to cover a lot more ground.

My family and I have changed plans without telling anyone before but what we wouldn't do was not cancel a reservation because after a certain time you get charged whether you show up or not.

Old-timer's name for a snowmobile.

While I lived at home before I got married, my parents always insisted on my checking in when I travelled. They told me quite plainly that they trusted me and weren't checking up on me but just wanted to know I was safe. I appreciated it because I knew that if my car went off the road, I wouldn't be laying dying in a ditch for days. It was reassusing to me to know that someone would be looking for me within a matter of hours if I was too over due. It gives great peace of mind to know that someone iw looking out after you.
