I actually learned that line as "Close only counts in horseshoes, hand grenades, and hydrogen bombs. :)
You obviously are much more sophisticated than I. grin

It was 1957 and was a Convair B-36.Thanks for the correct info. I knew I was a bit foggy on the details. It's been almost twenty years since some of my New Mexico friends told me the story, and I had pretty much forgotten it until this discussion jogged the old memory!

Hey, accidents happen.

I am extremely skeptical about a decommissioned warhead going off in such circumstances. I share your skepticism. Making a nuclear weapon denotate is one of those things that's incredibly difficult to make happen and incredibly easy to prevent. Simply removing the power sources to the initiator charges would probably preclude any chance of a nuclear explosion. From there on, there's lots of opportunities to create a mess with radioactive materials but essentially zero chance of a nuclear detonation.

I've seen workers do their jobs on nukes, and the procedures would blow your mind. They get all worked up over a teeny bit of surface corrosion on a screw head.
"Applying too much pressure" probably means it took more torque to remove the bolt than it took to install it. Big deal.
