The Iraqi government said on Sunday that half the Sunni Muslim militants behind the bombings shaking the country had arrived through neighbouring Syria.
The United States and Iraqi officials have long accused Iraq's neighbours, particularly Syria and Iran, of failing to stop Islamic militants from crossing into Iraq to carry out attacks.
U.S. and Iraqi officials say many of the insurgents responsible for the violence are not Iraqis.
"We have confirmation that 50 percent of these takfiris and killers who call themselves Arab jihadists come across the Syrian border," Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh told Al Arabiya TV, referring to radical Sunnis whose ideology brands some Muslims as infidels and allows their killing.
"Syria closes its eyes. As we have said before and we say again today, we are facing a bloody and painful day for us in Iraq as a result of Syria's lack of seriousness in controlling the border."
Iraq's Shi'ite-led government on Sunday renewed its pledge to crack down on Saddam Hussein supporters and Sunni militants after a truck bomb killed 135 people in a mainly Shi'ite area of Baghdad in the deadliest single attack since the 2003 invasion.
Around 1,000 people have been killed across Iraq in the past week in suicide bombings, shootings and fighting between militants and security forces, according to figures compiled by Reuters from official sources.
Syria says it is doing its best to control its border with Iraq.
"The Syrian regime has strong intelligence (agencies) and no bird can fly over the Golan Heights but when it comes to ... the Iraqi side they say they do not have the equipment or don't have this or that," Dabbagh said.

It's no time for stopgap measures... the problems in the middle-east are created by Islam and the potentates who agitate its violent underpinnings within the masses.
Kill off the major subsidizers of jihad(Iran/Syria) ... and the movement, worldwide, will wither and rot.

But when faced with violence from two thugs--one much bigger and stronger than the other--which one do you take down first? ...Syria or Iran? Should you take the time and attention to strike the smaller, weaker one first?
Must be part of a Syrian Muslim time-share presentation. You get to strap on the explosives only after watching the 2 hr presentation for their proposals.
Iran first. Syria will fold and surrender once "big brother" Iran crumbles.
The bad guys need to be dealt with. No retreat, no surrender. Easy for me to say.

Iran must be brought down along with Syria. Its as simple as that.
Tough to mine the roads, and the question is how many of the bomber boys, just drive across or come on the bus? I suspect more than come through the desert. How about closing the border? Forcing the bombers overland, and giving surveillance a chance. Any illegal border crossing, is death. One must also consider there is a Turkish border, a SA border, an Iranian border, a Kuwaiti border, an air border and a sea border. Must be a quagmire in there somewhere.
It's clear than Syria and Iran are terrorist sponsoring states. I thought Bush said he would treat terrorist sponsoring states as the enemy. The time to attack them was "yesterday", but "today" would help us win in Iraq. The governments of Syria and Iran are actively killing our soldiers in Iraq. Level Damascus, shut down Iran's oil pipelines. Let 'em have it.
AC-130 gunships (lots of them)in constant patrol of the borders....just annhilate anything that moves along the borders. It's really quite simple, and they can do it from 10,000 feet.
Yes, I've seen the pictures, quite impressive.
My forecast is that we cross the border into Syria first. Iran will then see the writing on the wall and know it will be attacked next - and will preemptively flood the eastern borders with insurgents and cause havoc while we're stretched thin taking out Syrian insurgent camps.
Actually, I stole that forecast from a guy who's been astoundingly accurate with predictions that he gushed out in May 2005.
