Baker Rd. pig races go “Daily”

Those in attendance at Friday night's installment of Craig Baker's “American Pig Race” on Baker Road paid little heed to the camera crew at first - after all, members of the media have been no stranger to this part of town over the last couple of months.

But when “The Daily Show with John Stewart” correspondent Rob Riggle decided to conduct an interview with one patron while simultaneously gnawing on an enormous sausage-on-a-stick and taking sips from a can of Busch Beer, there were plenty of double takes, pointed fingers and whispers from the 100-plus member crowd.

Audience members looked even more surprised when Riggle cut his interview subject off in mid-answer so he could holler encouragement at two pigs as they scampered by in one of the night's many races.

All in a night's work for the crew of the television program that has garnered nine Emmy and two Peabody Awards since 2000 and draws a nightly-viewing of some 1.5 million watchers.

Complete with a camera man, sound man and producer, correspondent Riggle, a veteran of “Saturday Night Live” as well as episodes of “Arrested Development” and “The Office,” took in the scene that has spawned from a neighborhood clash between Craig Baker and members of the Katy Islamic Association (K.I.A.).

Baker has stated that in late September, Yousuf Shaikh and Kamel Fotough came to his business to introduce themselves, then advised him that his business would not go well alongside their proposed mosque and Islamic Community Center, and that he would be wise to vacate the area.

Baker, whose family the street is named for and has had land in the area dating back more than 200 years, decided to protest the offense by building the pig pens on the closest part of his property to that recently purchased by the K.I.A.

“My business has been here since 1979 and I have lived here all my life,” Baker said in a 2006 interview.

“The pigs are a symbol of me being able to do whatever I want to do on my land.”

The K.I.A. denied Baker's claim that they threatened him. On Friday night, no lights were on nor any cars present at the house on their property, which sits at 1800 Baker Rd.

Riggle wore a smile on his face for much of the night as he watched kids clamber across bails of hay as their parents rooted on their swine of choice in the fast-paced sprint around the track and tapped their toes to the beat of “The Macarena” and “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” coming through the large speakers set up around the track.

“It's definitely an interesting story,” Riggle said.

“We heard about it on a national news program and felt like it was something our viewers would be interested in.”

“The Daily Show” is well-known for liberal viewpoints of politics, biting satirization of George W. Bush's White House and has a host of field correspondents - its team of “experts” - which travel the country to cover stories that are usually controversial at least on a local level.

“Daily Show” correspondent Stuart Miller, who accompanied Riggle and his technical crew Friday night, said at present, the segment will air on the Tuesday, Feb. 13 edition of the program, which airs on Comedy Central at 10 p.m.

I love it when elitists attempt to understand the pulse regular folk. They just don't get it. They are so detached from reality.

Physical possession of more than one meat stick is the issue.

It appears that no matter what the scale is, Islam's technique in introducing itself to a long-established "neighbor" is invasion and threats.
