Iraqi Government Seeks Release Of Iranians Detained By US Military

A senior Iraqi foreign ministry official said on Tuesday that the government was "intensively" seeking release of five Iranians detained by the U.S. military more than two months ago in northern Iraq.

"We are intensively seeking the release of the five Iranians," the senior official said.

"This will be a factor that will help in the release of the British sailors and marines" held by Iran since March 25.

The official also said that the Iraqi government had exerted pressure on those holding an Iranian diplomat, who was released Monday and returned to Tehran on Tuesday. The official would not say who had held the diplomat.

A senior government official, however, said Iraqi intelligence had held the Iranian diplomat. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

The U.S. military has said the five Iranians, who were arrested Jan. 11 in the northern city of Irbil, were part of an Iranian Revolutionary Guard force that provides funds, weapons and training to Shiite militias in Iraq.

it will look really bad if we give these guys back, for obvious reasons, but also because the U.S. came out publicly a couple days ago and said the 5 Iranians weren’t up for a trade

These Iranians did the same as what they are claiming the Brits did. If the Iranians don't have to release the Brits, then we certainly do not have to release these Iranians.

They should put the Iranians in a small room with a big clock on the wall counting down. A big digital clock that sounds like the clock on “24”. Very loud. When the clock hits 00:00:00 then they should release pigs in the room. Video tape it all, put it on youtube. Or, just shoot them as spies then let the pigs eat them.

Just this once, I hope he stands his ground. Before all the crap about terming the war. Before all the sanctions against Iran can take effect.

Now. Now or never, and forever get off the pot!

Proceed with regime change now, they will offer to give them back to stop it.

Look at how nice and cuddly Khadaffy has been since Ronaldus Maximus flattened his palace. Fortunately (for him) he was in a nearby tent- but I bet the view he had was awesome.

Yep, all of you are correct. That they never play by their own rules is what really burns my biscuits.

SANCTION IRAN NOW! [psst...may I borrow that bike? thanks!]

Something tells me that the Brits aren't going to be getting released any time soon. This is a serious high-stakes game of chicken unfolding here.

Possible even higher than in '79.

Sanctions against Iraq is a joke.

I heard Newt on Hannity yesterday that Iran [not Iraq] has only one refinery! One! All week, his guests have been pointing out that Iran needs to avoid US sanction.

I think that has everything to do with why they pulled this stunt with capturing these sailors and marines. They’re buying time.

Big question is, why are they helping Iraq? One of them in need of some nuke assistance?

Ever since President Jefferson, Muslim terrorists (then called Barbary Pirates) have understood and respected only one thing: military force. Back then, the U.S. tried to bribe the terrorists with cash payments, which of course just prompted more demands for more bribes. At the time, the U.S. lacked a strong Navy, but once it built a strong Navy it took military action and castrated the Barbary Pirates.
Now we have overwhelming military power, but our so-called leaders (including the Democrat/Socialists) are afraid to use it. The United States should bomb and destroy Iran’s oil pipelines, refinery, and nulclear sites. This would paralyze their economy - no cash from sale of oil - and force regime change in Iran. It would also make it easier for us to achieve victory in Iraq. In war, any objective less than victory is treason. The Demo-Socialists are traitors, waving the white flag to terrorists both in Congress and by visiting terror sponsoring states such as Syria. Pelosi, Bill Nelson (D-FL), Reid and the others are traitors.

Exactly - hostages for a negotiating tool. They illegally captured and are holding British sailors as hostages to bargain for the release of captured terrorists...

If we capitulate, we might as well pack all of our troops up and bring them home - as it would be just the start of a pattern.

Look at how nice and cuddly Khadaffy has been since Ronaldus Maximus flattened his palace.

The families of those slaughtered on Pan AM 103 in '88 over Lockerbie likely have a different take on Gaddafi.

The still-persistent notion that Reagan's strike defanged Gaddafi once and for all is a myth, part of the hagiographical glow that surrounds the late great president.
