The GOP Plays Fredo (Lott Throws in with Kennedy)
www.HughHewitt.com ^ | 6/7/07 | Dean Barnett

Posted on 06/07/2007 2:30:01 PM PDT by The Blitherer

What an odd day. Trent Lott, our very own Senatorial Republican Whip, has essentially declared war against the Republican base. Meanwhile, Harry Reid is pleading with George W. Bush to twist enough Republican arms so McCain-Kennedy can live through the night.

To offer a cinematic metaphor, McCain-Kennedy is currently Vito Corleone lying helpless in a hospital bed. Reid is begging W. to play Michael Corleone and rush to the hospital to hide the Godfather before Solazzo’s goons can finish him off. Bush would probably comply, too, but as we’ve long known, this bill’s champions are all a bunch of Fredos, destined to spend the evening crying “Papa!” over their precious bill’s bullet-riddled body.

And while we’re hitting the Fredo meme, here’s what Trent Lott had to say about my senior Senator, a public servant whose immorality has actually registered a body count and yet about whom Lott can see nothing ignoble:

Senator Kennedy, I appreciate the legislative leadership you've been providing. I know it's not easy, you know, your own colleagues and those of us over here have been beating you up. I mean, it's -- you know, you're a nice poster child. Thank you very much for what you do.

The Kopechne family could not be reached for comment. Fredo indeed.

None of these guys understands the politics of this bill. The opposition of the Republican base is principled. The newly found indignation of the GOP’s senate caucus over the bill probably less so. But then there’s the X factor: It’s not just Republicans voters who hate this bill. It’s not just foaming at the mouth nativists with life-sized Tom Tancredo posters in their bedroom whose blood this bill angers. Virtually the entire American electorate detests this atrocious piece of legislation.

If this bill became law, Democratic Nominee Clinton or Obama (who voted for it) would have to spend most of 2008 defending it. He or she would have to convince the country why having a porous national border as a matter of national policy is a good thing. If there aren’t enough good Republicans to kill this bill (a sobering and saddening fact), the Democrats will do it for us.

What if this bill in anything like its current form becomes law? The results for the country will be adverse to say the least. And the Democratic congress will have sunk even lower than a moribund and pathetic GOP.

Lott = Democrat
If the GOP wants to be taken seriously, then throw him out.

The Clinton's must have slipped Lott's FBI file to Kennedy.

You know, the one with the photos of the cheerleader and the nose tackle.....

IMHO Lott is a complete POS. He let Clinton off the hook and he never should have.

IMHO that is when the Republican PArty started the down hill slide to where it is today.

He indicated that the rule of law does not apply to some.

The President and Congress are not paying attention to us regarding this immigration bill.

What part of this lousy bill don’t these people understand?

We want secure borders and those here illegally to leave the country. We know you can’t arrest them all, but we could get rid of them by attrition.

Strengthen the laws already on the books, levy HEAVY fines on employers hire and people who rent to illegals, refuse public services and stop the anchor babies. They will go home.

BUILD THE FENCE we were promised and stop feeding this BS about jobs Americans won’t do and that security comes before legalization. WE DON”T BUY it.

Plain and simple, this is a PAID AMMNESTY BILL. You pay a fee and receive forgiveness. There is nothing on those ID cards you plan to hand out letting people know they are law breakers therefore, all is forgiven.

In the 16th century, the Pope sold indulgences (forgiveness) to people who donated to the building projects. It was wrong then and so is this. That is one of the things that split the Catholic Church and this lousy stab in the back immigration bill is splitting our party and the country.

My question is who is bribing or blackmailing Congress and what is your price to betray America?

Does anybody know what time the next cloture vote is? I thought it was supposed to be at 5, but I think I was wrong.

Oh! FREDO!

I saw the title and was wondering when calling someone a Hobbit became an insult.

But is Lott really a Fredo or a Frodo?

Maybe Pippin or Merry or Samwise Gamgee might fit him better.

And yes, maybe "Hobbit" was an insult geeks had to put up with in high school.

I won’t vote for anyone who votes for immigration reform. Not even a “lesser of two evils” vote. I won’t do it.

Secure the border, enforce the law, and if there are any unpleasant consequences from that, we’ll deal with that when it happens. I don’t trust anyone who wants to reform a law thats not being enforced, replacing it with more laws that won’t be enforced.

That’s great. Unfortunately they may be leaving Oklahoma but I’ll bet they are just moving to another state.

They’re not going home.

AI just got this from FAIR

FAIR has learned that instead of debating amendments on the floor, Senators this afternoon are hiding behind closed doors, drafting a massive, 400-page amendment that will replace huge chunks of the Bush-Kennedy bill currently being debated. Senate leaders are hoping to use the new substitute amendment to reverse changes made over the last 24-hours they don’t like, such as the Cornyn amendment on information sharing and the Dorgan amendment that sunsets the Y guest worker program. Leaders hope once this substitute amendment is adopted, they can get enough votes to end debate (i.e. to pass a cloture motion) and ram it through the U.S. Senate.

Is anyone else curious why long time Republicans are jumping ship? What life boats are they jumping into? Who is telling them, “jump or else!” Who is manning those life boats, and what is their destination?

Just wondered.

Kennedy! What a contemptible lout to have any praise whatsoever given to him from any quarter!

Lott is a thoroughly gutless, spineless, putrid lump of rotten cowardly flesh who is not only unfaithful to his constituents but also the Constitution and his oath to uphold it.

“When is Lott’s term up?”

If he votes for this bill, I’d say about 8 p.m. tonight.
