Night Of The Lott Long Knives? (Lott and the "problem" of talk radio)
www.HughHewitt.com ^ | 6/15/07 | Hugh Hewitt

Geez, Senator Lott is really unhappy with "talk radio" and some of his colleagues:

The Republican whip, Trent Lott of Mississippi, who supports the bill, said: “Talk radio is running America. We have to deal with that problem.”

At some point, Mr. Lott said, Senate Republican leaders may try to rein in “younger guys who are huffing and puffing against the bill.”

I think that this is a complaint that the old days were more fun for senators, and that the senators especially don't like the new media's ability to inform, inspire and direct public opinion. The end result of Senator Lott's blasts (another one here) is to of course further motivate the base because to the reality of a bad bill and past insults is now added a genuine note of dislike --which is not the way to build a party.

It may be that the Times and the Post cherry picked Lott's comments, but Senators McConnell and Kyl have got to take him aside and explain that the base is our friend, that new media isn't going away and that they don't want it to --unless, of course, the GOP would like to leave all media to the left.

Does anyone think it's possible Lott might actually support the Fairness Doctrine in order to "deal with the problem" of talk radio?

Mississippi, what can we do with this guy? Thad is probably going to vote for amnesty too. The calls and letters aren’t working. How can we put the heat on our two stooges?

As Laura Ingraham pointed out this morning, if Talk Radio was ‘running America’ the borders would have been secured a decade ago.

What Lott’s upset about is its no longer ‘business as usual’ for politicians like himself.

Get over it Trent.

I sent him an email, I noted that I hoped he enjoyed his years in the senate and was sorry he has decided not to run of any future elected office as he would not be re-elected to anything.

Lott was a turkey as Senate Majority Leader and needs to be reminded that he is/was ineffectual, at best.

Hey Trentie Boy.

You are not going to get us to accept this liberal garbage bill. and it has nothing to do with talk radio. The bill is garbage. Plain and simple.

He’s there until 2012. Don’t mean we can’t tar and feather him in the meantime.

Well, we know now which GOPer likes the return of the Fairness Doctrine!

Lott is an idiot. Americans do not want illegal alien amnesty. They want a secure border.

I joked about Lott a couple of years ago on here, and you’d think I put the pimp hand down on Jean Kilpatrick. The Mississippi people love this guy and barely noticed his sell out in the Clinton era.

He’s a weirdo and always has been. But they love him in Mississippi.

You know what, I say let them have the Republican party. We need to abandon them and have another party.

The Republican party is too far gone, and too deeply entrenched with elitists and lifelong politicians.

This is very shocking, esp. coming from a Republican.

Talk radio can be persuasive, and can also be “over the top” sometimes in the positions that talk show hosts and callers take on issues.

But the point is that there is the exchange of ideas on talk radio. Issues are discussed, and people will agree or disagree, but at least they are thinking about the issues. And they are free to discuss the issues of the day.

The scariest part of talk radio to me is some of those rabid Air America hosts. Their vitriol towards Bush is unbelieveable to me. Yet I would never want to shut them down, because they are expressing opinions, and exercising their freedom of speech.

If Trent Lott has a problem with talk radio, I suggest he go on the air and talk things over. Bill Clinton used to complain about Rush Limbaugh, and Rush responded by inviting Clinton on the show to discuss things.

bottom line — we all have our freedom of speech, in public, in sites like this one, and on talk radio.

Trent, don’t be a crybaby. If so many people on talk radio are wrong about this immigration bill, tell us where they are wrong. And tell us why you are right, persuade us. Don’t just whine about how Congress needs to get this done, and if they can’t, then Congress should go home. How pathetic was that for him to say that.

In a fight between Lott and Rush, Lott loses.

This is the reason that Newt’s 1994 revolution failed. Lott and his buddies were just passing for conservative. It’s taken a decade to reveal the lies.

Lott would vote for the Fairness Doctrine in order to “deal with the problem” with glee.

Talk radio? Hey, the biggest threat is http://thomas.loc.gov! In “the old days” it took a week or more to get the text of a bill (usually after the vote) and longer than that to get the Cong Record!

Now, I suspect, in many cases citizens read the bill before the congressmen do, and read the floor speeches before “journalists” can bloviate about them!

Don’t tell Mr Lott, please!

I’d rather be run by the first 10 voices on talk radio than the 100 Fat Gaywads in the US Senate!
