Several of the the candidates running in Sunday’s Upper House election which received international coverage failed to gain seats, Japanese news outlets reported on Monday.
Peru’s former President Alberto Fujimori, currently under house arrest in Santiago, Chile, facing charges for corruption and human rights violations, failed to get a seat through his candidacy for the People’s New Party (PNP), but did win 51,411 votes.
Yuko Tojo, the granddaughter of the executed wartime general Tojo who ordered the attack on Pearl Harbor, ran as an indepent in the hotly contested Tokyo constituency, but did not win a seat.
Kanako Otsuji, the first openly homosexual candidate in Japan also failed to get a seat through her Democratic Party Japan (DPJ) candidacy, but vowed to continue her fight for minority rights, according to a Reuters report.
The indigenous Ainu Kaori Tahara, backed by the New Party Daiichi in the Hokkaido constituency, and famous inventor Yoshiro Nakamatsu, also known as Dr. Nakamats, also lost out in the elections.
She sure doesn’t look like she is from Hokkaido to ME!

He figures, campaigning from house detention in Chile, he gets elected to Japanese parliament and thereby can claim international immunity as an office holder and avoid extradition to Peru where his jailing or execution awaits.
He thought wrong.
He is going to have to figure out another country in which to stand for elections.
