Des Moines, Iowa (AP) --

Republican Fred Thompson, whose entry into the presidential race has been long anticipated, will officially launch his candidacy Sept. 6 in a webcast on his campaign site, followed by a five-day tour of early primary states, The Associated Press has learned.

The preliminary campaign of the former Tennessee senator and "Law & Order" actor is to disclose details about how he will formally enter the race in a Thursday afternoon conference call with supporters.

House parties will be held nationwide on Sept. 6. A tour of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina will quickly follow the Internet announcement on , with later stops in Florida, and a homecoming event in Lawrenceburg, Tenn., on Sept. 15.

On Wednesday, Thompson will appear on NBC's "Tonight Show with Jay Leno" but he won't participate with his Republican rivals in a debate that same night in New Hampshire.

He "waited" until the date that, in the past, candidates would announce their intentions to run for POTUS.

I have a question for y’all.

What difference would it make if Fred did or did not participate in any of the debates?

For me they are nothing but media “fun and games”. I speculate here that the media gamers would give Fred lots of airtime if he chose not to debate and in which he could coment on the debatees responses, etc. The media sure would go nuts if he chose not to particpate.

To: I'm ALL Right!

The way I read it here, and at and many other sources, is that the press is announcing that he will announce.

"What difference would it make if Fred did or did not participate in any of the debates?

If Fred does not Debate he will be called:

Lazy

Cowardly

Not serious

...And all of that and more will stick as far as his campaign is concerned. He has to show up to most of the debates, especially the ones where the other major candidates appear.

If Thompson waits until September 6 to formally declare his candidacy, he won’t have to disclose any of the cash given to his campaign until January 31 — after many major contests are over, including the Iowa and Nevada Caucuses, and the New Hampshire, South Carolina, Michigan and Florida primaries. And he’s waiting til 12:01 AM, just to guarantee the legal deadline is past.

That way there can’t be a repeat of the “Fred didn’t come close to his confident prediction of donations” headlines that we got this summer. He doesn’t like that Sunday morning chatter that he’s not doing as well as expected - it’s the whiff of inevitable defeat.

“Whats he scared of?”

Being around a bunch of yipping wanna-bes lessens a man.

Naw. Us Tennessee boys don’t like to be told we HAVE to do ANYTHING.

If “the way you have to do it” is stupid, I’ve always had the “You hide and watch me” attitude, and done it the way I thought it ought to be done.

Other than things that are legally required, or that violate the laws of physics, doing it my way has usually worked, and is a lot more satisfying.

I like people who think like that. Fred’s like me.
