He "waited" until the date that, in the past, candidates would announce their intentions to run for POTUS.

If Thompson waits until September 6 to formally declare his candidacy, he won’t have to disclose any of the cash given to his campaign until January 31 — after many major contests are over, including the Iowa and Nevada Caucuses, and the New Hampshire, South Carolina, Michigan and Florida primaries. And he’s waiting til 12:01 AM, just to guarantee the legal deadline is past.
That way there can’t be a repeat of the “Fred didn’t come close to his confident prediction of donations” headlines that we got this summer. He doesn’t like that Sunday morning chatter that he’s not doing as well as expected - it’s the whiff of inevitable defeat.

In case you haven't noticed, THIS year is different than years past.
Also, don't Republicans deserve somebody who understands how very bad it will be for Hillary to be the president and is willing to show up a little "early" to work to see that does not happen?
The future of this country should not be treated so casually.
