In run for presidency, Thompson tries to pull a Schwarzenegger
The San Francisco Chronicle ^ | September 5, 2007 | Carla Marinucci,

Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson's political playbook - a high-profile visit to "The Tonight Show," a splashy bus tour, the efforts to take a familiar actor and reintroduce him in a new political role - contains pages that look eerily familiar to California voters.

Maybe that's because the former Tennessee senator has at his side some of the same key aides who, in nine short weeks, helped transform Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger from "The Terminator" into the chief executive of the Democratic-leaning state that is the most populous in the nation....

Thompson's campaign includes two veterans of another whirlwind effort - the 2003 California recall election that starred Schwarzenegger - who know firsthand at least some of the challenges ahead.

They are Todd Harris, who was Schwarzenegger's campaign communications director and will hold the same title for Thompson, and veteran Republican strategist and Fox News commentator Karen Hanretty, Schwarzenegger's press secretary during the 2003 recall effort, who will be Thompson's deputy communications director.

I know that the world of political activists can be a small one at times. However, it is surprising that Thompson has filled his communications department with former campaign staffers for Schwarzenegger - one of the Republican Parties leading RINO's.

Oh please, the article makes it sound like they're trying to make an actor into a Presidential candidate. Fred has LOTS more experience than just acting, including one and a half terms in the Senate, and plenty of political experience before that both in Tennessee and DC.

I don't have a problem with Fred getting experienced and successful campaign folks on his staff who happen to be more liberal than I. I'd much rather he had them, that some folks whose right wing credentials were just so, but had never won a State or National political campaign.

Yeah, it is terrible when a Republican puts Republicans on his staff.

What’s worse is they were successful in winning an election. Hiring them was really a dumb move if Fred wants to win an election in a Republican Primary...

I just wish I saw more solid conservatives on his staff to balance them out.

Thats certainly one conclusion you could draw. However, I think it is perfectly legitamite to question a candidates conservative credentials when he surrounds himself with moderate staff members. Who do you think are going to end up working on his White House Staff if he is elected?

Thompson hiring Open Border Spence as his acting campaign manager sleaks volumes.

I think his campaign says that Abraham was never hired to be an acting campaign manager - but merely a representative to DC or something like that. However, Thompson does seem to have a pattern of hiring staff that lean strongly to the moderate wing of the Republican party. This really does surprise me if he truly is the Conservative Stalwart we claims to be.

It's word play.

"Mr. Thompson’s new communications director, Linda Rozett, said that former Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham, a Republican who is also a former senator from Michigan, had joined Mr. Thompson in a “major role” that would be considered campaign manager — if the staff was using the terminology of a presidential campaign. (But they are not.)"

Ah, the dust storm ole Fred kicks up as he runs to the left...

He opposes tort reform. He opposes a marriage amendment. He has been as clear as mud on the border, and the only statement I’ve seen him make on the fence is that he doesn’t think it needs to be built of stone and mortar.

He can call all that crap federalism all he wants. It doesn’t matter, as it plays into the agenda of the left just the same.

But I’m sure he’ll have a lot of celebrities at all of his party parties. :)
