San Francisco hopes to reverse black flight
USA Today | can't find a date but it is somewhat recent | John Ritter

Posted on 09/08/2007 10:26:56 AM PDT by Lorianne

According to Census estimates, the number of blacks [in San Francisco] shrank from 13.4% of the population in 1970 to just 6.5% in 2005 — the biggest percentage decline in any major American city.

San Francisco is too expensive for people of all colors. Gavin Newsom thinks its just a diversity problem. ROFL!

This is an unintended consequence, in part, of rent control. Eventually rent controlled apartments are captured by people with contacts or a system of capturing the artificially lowered rental prices. Rent control gives a disincentive to build new rental housing. The end result, the exact opposite of what was intended . . . high housing prices. Meanwhile there is a huge group of people who benefit from the price controls so it is a political minefield if a politician sees the problem and tries to end it.

Reminds me of this story told bu John Derbyshire of the National Review...

-------------------------------------------------------

I’ve gotten to know an early-40s English chap who lives in Western MA. He is a small independent construction contractor who improves the houses of wealthy people in the Berkshires. He is very successful. He has a working-class English accent (not sure where he’s from). He strides into people’s houses and tells them confidently what they need, doing operational and financial calculations in his head and telling the customer what it will cost and how long it will take. He’s a highly skilled carpenter himself. For his projects he employs lots of independent contractors, who are usually younger locals and less skilled and savvy than he. He has a bright shiny extra-large pickup truck with tool box, and a boat on a trailer that he takes to lakes on summer weekends.

He’s also strongly left-liberal and strongly pro-Democrat. When he was in the UK, he was strongly pro-Labour and voted that way. He left the UK ~5 years ago to come here because he was unhappy with living conditions. Regulations made it hard for him to work and do his job and employ people. It was too expensive and crowded. Public services were falling apart. Crime was too high, the government wasn’t protecting him, and he was powerless to do anything about it. He was surrounded by unassimilated foreigners who made him feel like an outcast in his own country. He couldn’t see himself getting ahead in the UK or wanting to raise children there.

Now he and a class of people who fouled their nest in the UK (and Holland, and Germany and Denmark, and France...) are finding the conditions they helped to create in their countries of birth to be unbearable and they are fleeing to freedom and safety in America, Canada, New Zealand and other places ... However, they are bringing with them their unreformed social-democratic left-liberalism, which paralyzed their aboriginal societies and sabotaged their immune systems. Once in their new host country, they embrace the same nation-wrecking policies that they insisted on in their old nation.

What are we to make of this? In the Victorian era, the families of Britain and the empire sent out young men who were patriotic nation builders with a strict moral code and missionary desire to build great nations. Now a new class of people has figured out a formula for wrecking nations and they are pouring out of the nations they wrecked, intent on wrecking the next nation... What are your thoughts on the left-liberal nation wreckers? Should we turn back their refugee ships at our harbors?

---------------------------------------------------

A lot of these people fleeing the city they help create with their left-liberal pathologies and their votes (you deserve all you get if Newsome is re-elected mayor) are now moving to cities that are still conservative. How long will it take to re-make these conservative cities into the cities they themselves abandoned ? Food for thought.

It seems that affluent blacks are doing what they are doing in most urban cities. They are getting out. I don’t think the affluent are the only ones that should. Personally I think that poor minorities would be much better off and able to get a strong footing if they could escape the cities where they are kept as virtual slaves to a largely liberal establishment which offers them promises born of dependency with no hope for an independent future.

Cities are becoming more and more a place just to visit for all but the super rich and super poor.

Yeah that is true. I think such practices should be banned. One should not be discriminated against because they make too much money which is a joke in urban areas.

From one of the comments on th article. Spot on.

A city shouldn't allow newcomers to vote for 5-10 years. They need to assimilate the spirit of the city before they get a say in running it.

It seems that affluent blacks are doing what they are doing in most urban cities. They are getting out.

Like my nieghbors did. They ran a small neighborhood store in the city. The guy's brother was killed in a holdup. He said, "I am not raising my children here", and moved out to the sticks.

They brought up three really nice kids, all of whom were good students, and very popular. They have grown up and married and are doing fine.

He and his wife then sold the house, and moved to a better neighborood a few miles away.

We tease each other about it, them moving away from the Trash, and all, when we see each other.

It makes sense to me that they would leave. Anyone with half a brain and the means probably wants to get out of that city if they’re not in the fight to preserve any decency that may be left there.

I don’t believe most blacks buy into the diversity that SF promotes. It has nothing to do with race. Simple economics and genereal disgust at city government would explain it quite well in a nutshell.

Didn’t Dims have a solution for that in the 60’s and 70’s. I think it was called bussing.

And Hitlery and other Dims are promising to take, take, steal, more of our money so elect them and the problem is solved, right?

"A city shouldn't allow newcomers to vote for 5-10 years. They need to assimilate the spirit of the city before they get a say in running it. "

Switzerland does just that.

According to this article in the The Independent -- UK

"Switzerland has the toughest naturalisation rules in Europe. To apply, you must live in the country legally for at least 12 years, pay taxes, and have no criminal record. The application can still be turned down by your local commune which meets to ask "Can you speak German? Do you work? Are you integrated with Swiss people?"

"It can also ask, as one commune did of 23-year-old Fatma Karademir – who was born in Switzerland but who under Swiss law is Turkish like her parents – if she knew the words of the Swiss national anthem, if she could imagine marrying a Swiss boy and who she would support if the Swiss football team played Turkey. "Those kinds of questions are outside the law," says Mario Fehr. "But in some more remote villages you have a problem if you're from ex-Yugoslavia."
