In Sept. 11 chaos, Giuliani forged lasting image

Calm, proactive, and sympathetic, mayor shone brightly during darkest day

That first tower toppled at 9:59 a.m., a billion pounds of steel and concrete and bodies raining down. Smoke billowed like thunderheads, and New York’s mayor seemed to disappear into death’s maw.

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani was two blocks from the south tower, in an office on Barclay Street, trying to get the vice president on the phone, when his world went dark with smoke. Back at City Hall, Deputy Mayor Rudy Washington waited and wondered and dialed the governor.

“We really didn’t know what had become of the mayor,” he said. “I spoke to Governor Pataki, and we closed the schools and canceled the election.”

Then Mr. Giuliani was led through a basement and out onto Church Street, his head and shoulders dusted white with ash. He walked north into the surreal brightness of that day, comforting a police officer and dragooning reporters.

“Today is obviously one of the most difficult days in the history of the city,” he said softly. “The tragedy that we are undergoing right now is something that we’ve had nightmares about. My heart goes out to all the innocent victims of this horrible and vicious act of terrorism. And our focus now has to be to save as many lives as possible.”

Inevitably the question arose: How many lost? The mayor looked up through his glasses, aware that among the viewers of this live broadcast were the mothers, fathers, spouses, lovers and children of those who labored in the smashed towers.

“The number of casualties,” he said, “will be more than any of us can bear ultimately.”

Boy, she’s really porked out since then.
It must be all that pork she’s been feasting on up on Capitol Hill.

I think the mask was the only way that the camera man agreed to let her in the photo-op.

Any Republican for Guiliani... a positive piece from MSNBC should in and of itself disqualify him as a reasonable consideration.

I can think of a lot worse, much, much worse, who may be elected President.

I just thank God he was the Mayor of New York when 9/11 transpired. Living on Long Island and knowing a person who died in the Towers, seeing my fellow Islanders cry at funerals for family lost, well, Rudy showed us tremendous character and leadership. While he was only the Mayor of New York, those of us who live in the shadows of New York City, live in the Tri State region, we took comfort and give him gratitude for his courage, his leadership. He was a rock when we needed one. For that I will never show any disrespect for the man.

As well, I would not be disappointed if he was my President, there are a lot worse.

“Image” - that’s all it is.

All photo op, no substance. No thanks.

But Giuliani is liberal on every single issue every day of the week. And Thompson is too, except on Tuesdays and Thursdays when he’s a moderate. Have people really surrendered all hope for a small-government, Constitutionalist in the WH?

The choices for us are limited and we have to choose a candidate that will pull in independent voters as well as some cross-over Democrats.

Who do you think could do that better than these two?

Good point, but if we can't get our guys elected, we're left with nothing but out pride.

Something that actually works beats something that feels/sounds good but is destined for failure.

The Ron Paul campaign is a good example.

Well, a Republican implementing the Democrat agenda qualifies as "failure" to me.
If Fred were to choose Rudy as a running mate, I wouldn't vote for him.
