Howie Carr’s bales of hay

excerpt:

AS FORMER Senate president William M. Bulger sees it, longtime nemesis Howie Carr is looking a bit like Buridan’s Ass. He’s “a donkey caught between two bales of hay,” noted Bulger, referencing a problem of decision-making that is named after the 14th-century French philosopher Jean Buridan.

Carr will end up with one very lucrative bale, probably at WRKO-AM, the station he tried to leave. But for a while now, the popular radio talk show host who lives to pillory politicians - especially Bulger - has been caught between two radio stations...

Back to that donkey: Carr took himself off WRKO’s air in late September, so he isn’t being paid, according to Shepherd Davidson, a lawyer for Entercom Boston, which owns the station. The talk show host also lost a car provided by Ira Motors that was part of his pay package, according to publicist George Regan, who represents WRKO.

“Part of his compensation was the automobile. When he wasn’t doing the ads anymore, that was it,” Regan said. Meanwhile, the offer from WTKK was contingent on Carr not being bound by WRKO’s contract.

The article continues by saying that WRKO wants him back
badly to do afternoons, and ‘RKO realizes that with Imus
back in Dec., there’s a chance he could return to
WTKK and provide stiff competition for The Felon. Entercom
and WRKO know that Howie’s losing a lot of money over this—
he does still have the Herald column and book receipts
from Brothers Bulger, but how long will the latter last?

She says that ultimately the way things have gone
legally he will probably wind up back at WRKO.

Targeted pol smacks rival as ‘coward’
By Howie Carr | Sunday, November 4, 2007 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists

From poison pen to poison crayon - yet another ancient Boston political tradition, the “anonymous” attack leaflet, has fallen on hard times.

Just ask Boston City Council candidate John “Don’t Call Me Zip!” Connolly, the Globe-endorsed Harvard twerp who has now admitted that his campaign mailed out at least two anonymous hit pieces this weekend against incumbent City Councilor Steve Murphy.

Murphy edged Connolly two years ago for the fourth and final at-large seat on the Council, and Connolly is again trying to oust Murphy Tuesday.

After Connolly’s e-mailed confession, an angry Murphy issued a statement yesterday afternoon.

“Connolly is a coward,” Murphy said. “He came clean only because of a backlash from disgusted voters. He has displayed character flaws which make him unfit for public office.”

Interesting about losing use of the car (though I think he and Cathy aren’t hurting; they won a Porsche
or some kind of car in some kind of raffle a couple years back, etc.). The article mentions a “new book”—
as in, NOT the Brothers Bulger but something else? I know Howie’s listeners have urged him to write a book
(or “drag up old columns”, as some would say) about what he calls The Kennedy Crime Family,
for example.

Also I haven’t heard enough of Finneran’s show to judge but does the Felon refrain from criticizing
ANY politician? That doesn’t sound right.

This is getting old. I hope he returns to the airwaves soon. I don't really care which staion, but the afternoon slot would be nice because I can't stand that whiney pussbag known as Jay Severin, so I've got nothing to listen to on the way home.

Hurry back, Howie!!!

yes in some ways I’d prefer the aft slot too esp. since
I work nights and a WTKK morning shift would mean I’d
have to tape it via comp. and listen back later (a slight hassle))))—and maybe it’s more suited to afternoon/
early evening radio anyway.

and we all miss him. If he did go to WTKK it would prob
be mornings though as they wouldn’t displace Jay. Not unless
they felt it would really help their ratings—and mornings
are huge for a station (hence why they want Howie)

The 6a - 10a slot on RKO is unbearable, I don't intentionally listen to it, however, there have been times when I've been in someone else's vehicle and that person had RKO on, I've heard the felon do nothing but defend his decisions when he was the speaka, praise and kiss the @sses of devil, kerry and kennedy and twice now I've had the misfortune of hearing the screaming and I do mean SCREAMING BANCHEE Wendy Murphy, OMG, this woman is out of control.

I've said it before,,,Howie should return to RKO and then say anything and everything to get his butt fired, all he has to do is call grace ross a fat lesbian and that should be enough to have him terminated....perhaps on top of the ross thing, he could call fat matt a fag, that should definetly work, it worked for Depetro!

WRKO might be a little more lenient with Howie saying
rude remarks because Howie got better ratings than
DePetro did. But after awhile they might get tired
of getting listener and SPONSOR complaints (that was a key
reason why they let DePetro go—crappy ratings plus
sponsor complaints, who needs him?) and they’d let him go.

But...then he gets to WTKK and sponsors, remembering
the ‘controversial’/’offensive’ things he had said on
WRKO, are shy about buying time. Here WRKO would laugh
their butt off, because even though Howie might be
getting good ratings on the FM side, he’s not
making WTKK any money..
(though they wouldn’t be laughing at Howie taking
listeners away from the Felon. Of course I’ll bet there
aren’t that many to take away from Tommy Taxes as it is...)

A “reliable source” says Howie is returning to WRKO—with,
as we “furries” say, his tail between his legs.

http://www.savewrko.com quotes a bit in All Access
saying that he’s giving up his attempt to go to WTKK
and they say this info is from “a reliable source”.
“CARR has been trying to make the jump despite the court ruling that upheld ENTERCOM’s matching of GREATER MEDIA’s multi-year contract offer, but ALL ACCESS sources say to expect CARR back on the air with WRKO shortly and for WTKK to move on.”

It’s a weird situation—maybe if he goes on air and
attacks Jason and Julie, etc.—but keep in mind if he
gets fired from ‘RKO and jumps to ‘TKK, his sponsors
will have it fresh in their minds what he did...

...for example suppose he has a DePetro moment. Would
they want to sponsor “Damaged Goods”? But yes, who knows.

The piece from All Access is quoted on SaveWRKO.com
in its entirety. It can also be seen at http://www.allaccess.com (though you may need to be a member to see it) by going to Net News and scrolling down. More
from it: “Now, which of the stations, if either, will sign up for the return of DON IMUS in syndication through ABC RADIO NETWORKS, possibly in JANUARY? IMUS aired on WTKK before his firing earlier this year by CBS RADIO. WTKK’s loss of CARR means that the morning slot for which CARR was ticketed remains open, with middayer MICHAEL GRAHAM continuing to hold down the morning fort for now.”

two comments from savewrko.com:

DCL wrote:
Returning to WRKO would be in Howie’s interests to the extent that it would prevent damages from accruing during the pendency of his appeal. If he is ultimately successful, he can then jump ship.

Brian Maloney (Radio Equalizer/SaveWRKO.com) replied:

If he walks through Guest Street’s door again even once, it will be permanent. Talk about conceding defeat.

I think Howie’s sponsors are smart enough to figure out what’s going on and I don’t think they will hold it against him if he decides to shoot his mouth off on the air. Most of Howie’s sponsors will follow him wherever he goes,,Howie is a big talent and has a huge following, we all know what’s going on here and it would be a wonderful thing if Howie gets fired, gets hired at TKK and takes ALL his sponsors with him, RKO will NEVER be the same.

Yeah, you could be right...

the following is from Media Nation by Dan Kennedy.
http://medianation.blogspot.com

The trade publication All Access reports that the Howie Carr will return to WRKO (AM 680), an admission of defeat following the courts’ refusal to let him jump to WTKK (96.9 FM) in violation of a provision in his now-expired contract. Brian Maloney of Save WRKO and Jessica Heslam of the Boston Herald have the details.

Maloney thinks Carr has been “humiliated.” I disagree. But it is an admission on his part that he got incredibly bad advice in his attempt to shift to ‘TKK’s morning drive. As “Amusedbutinformedobserver” correctly points out, if Carr had simply let his contract with ‘RKO run out, he could then have done anything he liked. Instead, the shift to ‘TKK was announced while he was still under contract, and a provision that allowed ‘RKO to match any other offer kicked in, to his detriment.

It looks like Boston radio could soon be back to the same as it ever was. I’d guess ‘TKK will return to its previous schedule by picking up the new Imus show for morning drive and moving Michael Graham to a shift where no one will run the risk of actually hearing him.

About the only change in the offing is for the worse — Imus’ loathsome former sidekick, Bernard McGuirk, remains at large, and could wind up at WRKO.

I’m telling you....the way RKO operates, it’s just a matter of time before Bernie ends up there. I would be shocked, shocked I tell ya if he didn’t end up there! They will just slide him in quietly, make the deal on the sly like they did with the felon, maybe even pair him with the felon, although that may not be a possibility because the felon from what I hear does not engage in the kind of nonsense that Bernie is famous for, however, the felon is under contract and what julie says goes........

Let’s see if he’s back. Prob. not THIS early but who knows. At least we’ll see if Toad Finebore mentions it at the start.
Here goes. they’re running the intro now (incl. a reference
to “was crowd noise pumped into the Indy game?”)

Now, “Todd Feinburg, on the Howie Carr WRKO Radio Network”

Toad again.
