Late-Breaking Surge for Thompson
National Review Online ^ | 2 January 2008 | Peter Robinson

Posted on 01/02/2008 3:09:35 PM PST by big'ol_freeper

The latest news from Iowa? According to Zogby’s latest—and I quote: “Sen. Fred Thompson…has seen a late-breaking surge.” (Rich notes the same poll below.)

What’s going on here? My guess is that there are whole lot of Iowa Republicans who have about the same attitude that David Limbaugh displayed in his column yesterday:

Fred is the only [candidate] I don't have major reservations about….I find his lack of "fire in the belly" refreshing. He strikes me as one of the few presidential candidates since Ronald Reagan whose primary motivation is not personal aggrandizement but rather serving and leading the nation in very troubled and dangerous times. I see him as almost being drafted into this project, and his refusal to drool publicly over the prospect of becoming the most powerful man in the world is positively delightful.

Fred is surging. I never thought I’d hear myself say this but thank God for McCain having the balls to attack Romney and thank God for Huckabee being an idiot with his silly on again off again ad. Ed Rollins released Hucks ad any way through a subordinate. lol Suits the Huck right.

We can hope. I’m a Fred supporter and like just about everything he stands for. But I find myself hoping he wins just to see the media react (including Fox News)—forgetting that I want him to win for his positions.

I believe the great Harry Reid said that, hmmmmm?? ;-)

There’s gonna be a lot of surprised pollsters and media people tomorrow night when the Cauci results come in!

Even if Thompson finishes ahead of McCain, the DBM will still anoint McCain the “winner”.

he taped a 17-minute video in which he makes his case more calmly, deliberately, and and with incomparably greater respect for the issues than has any of his opponents.

I have received a report today of an Iowa caucusian who WAS for Huckabee (solely because of the pro-life issue, I'm guessing), but who then saw this video and now will vote for Thompson.

Despite a few points up, Fred is still WAY behind Romney & Huckabee. I don’t even believe Zogby’s so-called ‘SURGE’ will be able to propel him into 3rd place.

Fred said he will quit if not placing in top two. Looks like it’s going to happen any way.

Some of the recent polls mentioned GOP primary voters at close to 50% undecided.

If that is then case, Fred has a good chance of taking second place.

GO FRED GO!!!!

They just mentioned this on Mark Levin Radio. I’m praying it pans out.

-snip-

But as modest as it so far remains, his sudden rise in the polls—this “late-breaking surge,” to quote Zogby again—could persuade whole slews of Republicans that Fred could indeed win after all, leading to a definitive breakout.

-snip-

Let's hope so.

Even if Thompson finishes ahead of McCain, the DBM will still anoint McCain the “winner”.

That will be very hard to pull off if Fred is close to or takes second. Of course, they'll still try.

See that's proof he has no fire in the belly...it's snowing. Anyone with enough fire in the belly would be rained on.

Fred Thompson is heading back into the top tier. At this rate, he’ll finish at least a strong third place, and being the top vote-getter isn’t inconceivable.
