The vision of airplanes rumbling slowly over San Francisco, spraying a pesticide mist on parks and playgrounds, has now mobilized one of the most effective lobbying groups in the world.
Moms.
The California Department of Food and Agriculture's plan to eradicate the light brown apple moth with aerial spraying over the city this summer was already in an uphill fight. But when 100 or so mothers and kids showed up at City Hall on Monday afternoon with signs like "Keep Your Spray Off My Baby," it was clear that the battle had entered a new phase.
"Nothing gets people more irate than a government institution spraying their kids from a plane," said Jared Blumenfeld, director of the San Francisco Department of the Environment. "It's a bad movie. And nobody wants to be in that movie."
Lynn Murphy, a mother of two, was at Monday's rally, somewhat surprised to be chanting "Stop the Spray" along with everyone else.
"I don't consider myself an activist," said Murphy, who lives a few blocks from Golden Gate Park, where the most moths have been found so far in the city. "But when it comes down to your children and protecting your family, it seems so much more urgent. I never thought I would be talking to my 4-year-old and telling her that we are going up to the state Capitol to talk to politicians."

They are planning to aerial spray San Francisco (and other parts of the Bay Area) every 30-90 days for 2-10 years in order to eradicate a moth that, so far, has done no damage. (Another account has it at 3-4 days every month for up to 10 years.) This is beyond horrifying. The health implications are enormous.

What is the pesticide that they are planning to use? Not a mention in the article.
Where did you get that silly notion? All kinds of things are done to us that are dangerous. Vaccinations, food additives, etc.

My wife’s sister passed away from cancer some years ago. There was a large fruit orchard right behind them which was periodically sprayed, year after year. Although not proven, the neighbors and family believe the spraying may have been the cause due to the high incidence of cancer in the surrounding neighborhood. No way to prove it of course, so I suppose we’ll never know for sure.

The USDA and CDFA are promoting Checkmate as a harmless pheromone. But not only is it a synthetic pheromone, it includes a long list of "inert" ingredients that are toxic to humans and animals. The pesticide is enclosed in time-released plastic microcapsules, small enough to be inhaled and become lodged in the lungs.

Yep. That's what I thought when I saw your post. Better climb back under your blankets. Who knows what they are doing to you through your computer.
In the mid-80’s, my mother was pregnant (would have been #4) as were 4 other women on our street. In the week after one particular company sprayed lawns with pesticides, all 5 of them miscarried (all were in second trimester). There was an enormous spike in miscarriages in the city that year, more than 5x normal. I still don’t know why they didn’t pursue charges at the time. It didn’t get coverage outside of the local press (who refused to identify the company to the general public), and I don’t think anything happened to the company or its operators after it declared bankruptcy, probably from general incompetence unrelated to their use of compounds toxic to human pre-borns.
That's a strong likelihood. There are cluster incidences of cancer. I wonder if anyone has done a study on that particular area.
